King's Students Win Regional Composer’s Competition

Performing Arts

Year 11 students, Luke Johnstone and Max Graham, both successfully won First Place trophies at the 2021 Gold Coast Composer's Competition during the semester break. This was an exceptional achievement for both boys especially as it was their first piano composition and first music competition.

Luke competed against other young Gold Coast composers in the 15 - 17 years All Instruments category, with his composition entitled 'For Those Who Don't Return.' Max competed against composers from across Queensland in the 15 - 17 years All Instruments category, with his composition titled 'Hero's Journey.' The event was presented by the Gold Coast chapter of the Queensland Music Teachers' Association and both pianists performed their compositions live to an adjudicating panel and audience.

Dr Christina Churchill has been teaching the boys how to compose during their piano and composition lessons for the past five months. Max is now focusing on recording a song to submit for the Triple J Unearthed High later this month, and both students will be entering new piano compositions they are working on for the Young Composers' Competition that will take place in September.
