Primary Chess: Kings of the Coast

Nearly 80 students from Prep – Year 6 represented King’s in the Gold Coast South InterSchool Chess Championships last Thursday. Students were put into teams and divisions based on skill level grades A, B or C. It took a couple of rounds for our younger competitors to get used to finding their boards, but once they sat down (with help from Mr Watson, Mrs Warner and Mrs Brown) and the organisers called 'start,' it was GAME ON.

The day continued with a flurry of smiles and energetic stories. In true King’s fashion, the group arrived with the largest numbers of any school, and showed their high level of skill, claiming 1st and 2nd in the Open Division, over rivals Somerset College. This victory qualifies two of King's teams to represent at State Finals in mid-October. Micah Young (Captain), dominated the field with an impressive 7/7 performance while Year 4 student, Luke Hart, placed 2nd with 6.5/7 and Daniel Lim (Year 6), 6/7 placing 3rd, individually. Teams:

  • King’s Teams 1 - Gold Coast Champions: Micah Young, Luka Hart, Koatro Inukai and Daniel Lim.
  • King’s Team 3 - Placed 2nd: Siannah Cooke, Rentaro Inukai, Zane Gabriel and Mason Case.

The success definitely did not stop there, with individual and team medal winners in both B and C Grades.  King’s Team Ucharatna placed 1st in B Grade, including Aya Ucharatna, Jihun Kim, Alana Lim and Emma Zhu, while King’s Team Smith placed 1st in C Grade, including Tyrus Smith, Carl Zhuang, Hunter Davis and Jamie Wang.

Overall the day was a great success and we were very proud of everyone’s efforts. GO KING’S!
