Year 3 Students Journey Through Space

Year 3 students in 3T, 3H and 3G ventured to the Brisbane Planetarium recently, as a part of their unit entitled Third Planet from the Sun. The Planetarium visit was a fascinating way for the budding astronomers to learn more about the universe and see it recreated in the Planetarium’s Cosmic Skydome theatre. Students were immersed in an educational and entertaining experience as the Planetarium’s astronomers took them on a journey through space. They loved the recreation of Australia’s night sky seen through a high-resolution, digital full-dome planetarium as they marvelled at God’s amazing handiwork in the interactive night sky overhead.

The students developed a deeper appreciation of the rotation of the Earth around the Sun and the orbit of our Moon, and were especially fascinated to discover there are likely billions of comets orbiting our Sun in the Kuiper Belt and even more in the distant Oort Cloud. Before 'returning to Earth,' the students investigated models of a space rocket, an astronaut and learned more about the race for space.

As well as enjoying the Planetarium visit, students undertook a rousing 'treasure hunt' along the Children’s Walk and a quiet stroll through the beautiful Japanese Garden in the Brisbane Botanic Gardens at Mt Coot-tha.
