"Splish! Splash! Year 1 and 2 have had a blast! They have dived into the end of the term with the amazing swimming lessons at Gullivers Swim School in Upper Coomera. The students have loved learning how to swim with their friends and are becoming more and more confident in the water.
Our students have been trying their best to help one another get ready and practising teamwork by being a supportive friend when someone needs encouragement in the pool. It has been a wonderful experience for the students in Year 1 and 2 to mingle and build friendships across the grade levels.
The highlight for many has been the achievement of ringing the bell in front of the whole swimming complex to graduate to the next level of swimming. For others the highlight was the ride on the bus filled with lots of singing and giggling (and maybe a little snoring on the way home). This experience has enriched the classroom environment as friendships grow stronger and we cheer one another on! We can’t wait to do it again!"

Year 6 Students Develop Business Aptitude
11 March 2021
'How can young entrepreneurs identify a need and solve a problem by starting a business?’
This has been the 'problem statement' guiding our second project in Year 6. For the entry event, students had the opportunity to test a range of products and consider what problem the product solved, its target market and associated costs. Students then had fun experimenting with the scientific process of product development. Each class made several versions of a product and discussed how and why each was different. The cohort also looked at the changes to materials at each stage of manufacture.
Each Year 6 class has also enjoyed playing Business Monopoly, created especially for our students by the very talented Mrs Sanson, to support the development of financial literacy. An informative visit from the Commonwealth Bank also provided further support to our students in this area.
The opportunity to engage with an authentic audience in the form of a parent panel was an extremely valuable learning experience. Four parents who own a business generously gave up their time to come and talk to our students about their business and answer a diverse range of questions from their eager audience.
Students are currently working on creating a business plan of their own and they will present their ideas to a Shark Tank Panel, with results to be published in the next edition of the College Newsletter.

Year 9 Geography Biomes Field Trip
10 March 2021
It was an early start to the school day for the Year 9 Geography students on Tuesday, 9 March. At 8.15 am we all set off to the Currumbin Valley and surrounding area to study the biomes of the Gold Coast.
Mt Cougal National Park was the first stop to explore the sub-tropical rainforest biome. Here students completed field sketches and collected data for their fieldwork report using our newly-acquired equipment: a densitometer, to calculate canopy cover; a soil meter, to determine PH and moisture levels; a wind meter, to determine how strong the wind was blowing; and a wet/dry thermometer, to determine temperature and humidity. The students were extremely professional in the way they collected their data to ensure the integrity of their assessment. Further stops were also made at Beree Badalla Reserve in Palm Beach to look at a mangrove biome and Currumbin Beach as an example of a coastal biome.
Students are now required to collate the data they gathered and evaluate the impact of humans on our local biomes - I look forward to seeing their reports and recommendations in a few weeks.

Students Achieve PB's at Regional Swimming Trials
9 March 2021

A few of the King's Pimpama swimmers shared their recent experiences at the Hinterland District Team at the South Coast Regional Swimming Trials. Well done for all the Personal Best results, and congratulations to those who have been selected to compete at the State Championships in a few week's time.
"On Monday, 1 March, I was lucky enough to be selected to represent King’s as part of the Hinterland District Team at the South Coast Regional Swimming Trials. I was competing in the 200m Breaststroke event. It was a really tough competition with lots of really good swimmers from all across the South Coast. I was super nervous, but also really excited. Although there were only 3 swimmers from King’s Pimpama. I saw lots of familiar faces by the pool - lots of friends from my club, and also my coaches. I missed out on being selected on the South Coast team by just a few seconds! And placed 3rd overall in my age group across the region in my event. I will continue training hard, and can’t wait to do it again next year."
- Bailey Tetonga - Year 6
"I represented the Hinterland district and our school in eight events at this swim meet. Throughout the day I got PB’s in nearly all my events and was so excited to see the results go up on wall! I made the South Coast Swim Team for 3 events! 100 Butterfly -3rd, 200 Butterfly -2nd and 400IM -2nd. It was a big day of racing and cheering on my friends from King’s and other swim clubs. I am really looking forward to competing at the State Championships in a few weeks!"
- Mason Mower - Year 6
"The Regional Swimming Carnival was a really fun day. It was such a privilege to represent the school. I was able to sit with my coach and the other students I train with, so I felt confident. I was pleased with my swims as I swam a PB for each event, and I finished 4th overall in the 100m Breaststroke. This was my second experience competing at Regional Swimming. I love the competition, and enjoyed the day."
- Mia Caldwell - Year 7

As the school continues to grow, so too has the demand for our canteen service. There is an ongoing need for parent volunteers to help keep our amazing Canteen running and if you are able to help out any time during the term, please contact Grace on (07) 5587 7660.
From the beginning of Term 2, all lunch orders will need to be placed online via MunchMonitor as the Canteen will become paperless which means that no 'over the counter paper lunch orders' will be processed at the canteen for students or staff. Some pre-packaged food and drinks will still be available for over the counter purchases at break times.

Class Coordinators' Get-together at Gainsborough Greens
11 March 2021

Our 2021 Class Coordinators had their first get together at the Gainsborough Greens Golf Club recently. Group Head of Primary, Mrs Lorraine Oswald, gave a heartfelt thanks on behalf of the College for the important role that these parents play in strengthening our community and supporting our Primary teachers. The breakfast event also included a brief presentation from King's Director of Innovation and IT, Mr Mal Galer, who demonstrated some of the new features of the improved Compass App. This helped our Class Coordinators become better equipped to support other parents who may have App questions throughout the year.
Thank you to Mrs Lorraine Oswald and College Principal Mr Rob Verreynne for hosting the event. Thanks to our other King's staff members who attended including IT Support Coordinator, Mrs Jo Robinson, and Year Level Coordinators Mrs Michele Wiehe and Mr Ralf de la Mare. It was also wonderful to have Pastors Matt Treagus and Sue Sweeney, and P&F Chairman, Mr Grant Patching, attend this event.
