The fourth of May marked a milestone day in the life of King’s Christian College, as all three campuses held building opening ceremonies attended by State and Federal Members of Parliament, local Councillors, Church Elders and Executive Pastors, members of the College Board, Principals, ISQ and BGA (Block Grant Authority) representatives, P&F Committee members, and other special guests.
Pimpama’s event included a belated opening of the Stage 3 Primary Block as well as the new High School building, new Library Hub and administrative facilities that were all completed by the end of 2020.
The tours to the new High School building showed off the 12 flexible learning classrooms, including two science labs, a dance studio and an IDT classroom.
The College was honoured to host Mrs Melissa McMahon MP who represented the Queensland Government, and acknowledged the State Governments's significant funding contribution toward the High School, Library Hub and Administration buildings. In her speech, Mrs McMahon’s spoke very fondly of King’s and the impact its three campuses are having on the wider Gold Coast and Logan Village communities.
It was a treat for our Primary and Noah's Ark students to invite mums into their classrooms for Mother's Day Celebrations this year. On Friday, 7 May, our special guests spent quality time in class with their children looking over their schoolwork and enjoying some creative activities together, like making clay sculptures, sugar hand scrubs, jewelled crowns, paper flowers and more. There was even an energetic dance party held in Prep! Every mum received a beautiful hand-written card. It was heartwarming to see every classroom from Kindy to Year 6 brimming with love and laughter as we collectively celebrated the blessing of mothers.
On behalf of our College, thank you to our incredible community of King’s mums for all you continue to do to love upon your children and sow into their lives every day.
The P&F Mother's Day gift bags were also a great success. On behalf of the P&F committee, thank you mums for all that you do in your children's lives.
In science, students in Year 1 have been learning about the changes that occur when different materials are mixed together. With their peers from King's Logan Village, our young scientists' learning came to life last week at an incursion run by Street Science.
How many books can you read between 10 May and 27 August? The Premier's Reading Challenge has begun for all students from Prep to Year 9.
The Premier's Reading Challenge is an annual statewide initiative for Queensland schools and early learning centres. It aims to improve literacy and encourage children to read for pleasure and learning.
Last year, 905 schools and 318 centres took part in the challenge, with more than 161,000 Queensland children reading 2.23 million books. What an achievement!
Download your Premiers' Reading Challenge form and hand it back to the library when it is finished:
In a clean sweep, reminiscent of the solitary round prior to COVID in 2020, all four debating teams had wins in Round Two (April 28). The competition gets increasingly difficult as we move into the Secret Subject rounds. Round Three will be on 19 May.
The school cross country team had the privilege to compete in the HDSS (Hinterland District) carnival on 4 May at Runaway Bay. This next level of competition is a step-up from the school inter-house event but our team put in a great effort and rose to the challenge of the day.
Three of our runners finished in the top seven in their respective races and have now been selected to compete at the South Coast Regional Carnival on 1 June. We wish these boys all the very best:
Jacob Hankinson - 12 year boys
Bryan Ikizakubuntu - 13 year boys
Kristian Meuwesen - 15 year boys
Congratulations to the whole team on your efforts on the day.
Kristian Meuwesen, Year 9, competed in the QLD All Schools Cross Country competition recently. After finishing fifth in his age group at the Hinterland Cross Country, Kristian was keen to put his skills and fitness as a runner into the next challenge. Kristian really enjoyed this experience, which has also boosted his competition confidence. Congratulations Kristian - keep up the training and we look forward to hearing how you perform at Regionals!
The upper primary soccer boys took part in the Pacific Pines 9-a-side Soccer Tournament on Wednesday 28 April, playing against teams from many northern Gold Coast schools. The competition is held annually at the Pacific Pines Soccer Club.
King's Pimpama Year 5/6 boys played three tense group stage games before being eliminated in the semi-finals by Park Lake State School in a nail-biting penalty shootout. Eight teams from six schools participated on the day, creating a hugely competitive day for all schools.
"Our team of boys played extremely well. We made it to the semi-finals. The score was 3-3 and went to a penalty shoot-out. The boys did their very best. However, the other team managed to get the win. I am so proud of our team and how well we did," said Year 6 student Mitchell Garcia.
The team would like to thank Mr Ruben for coaching them on the day and Mr Spink for the training leading up to the competition.
On Wednesday, 28 April, the soccer girls from Years 7, 8 and 9 had the opportunity to compete in the Pacific Pines Soccer tournament, which was held at Pacific Pines Soccer Club.
"We played three games against different schools and won two out of those three games. This qualified us to make it into the semi-finals which we were all excited about.
Although we didn’t make it into the grand final we were all very proud of how far we made it in the competition. We were very happy with how well we were able to come together as a team and play the best we could.
It was a good day and a great experience for all students to compete against a number of teams from schools in the area and gain some invaluable experience.
We all had so much fun."
- Lily Petherick - Year 9
A big thank you to Mrs Bruneau for looking after the team at the competition.
Congratulations to Bethany Lakeman, Year 9, for winning three gold and two silver medals at the Queensland State Skipping Championships. Her team also broke an Australian Double Dutch speed record.
Beth competed both individually and as part of a team in speed, freestyle and Double Dutch events. Individually Beth won the silver medal for Tripple Unders. With her team, she won one silver and three gold medals and broke the Australian record for the 4 x 30 Double Dutch Speed. The record was 273 jumps and Beth's team scored 302.
Beth has also qualified for the third time to represent Australia at the World Championships.
Bethany is dedicated to her training regime and this has resulted in exceptional skills and her achievements are a result of her hard work.
Congratulations Bethany. Happy skipping into many more records!
On Wednesday 26 May, High School students supported the Missions program at King's Christian College with a gold coin donation and may wear a casual T-shirt with their PE Sports uniform. Food will be available to purchase at second break.
The focus of this term is Teen Challenge QLD (TCQ). TCQ provides emergency crisis accommodation for young men aged 16-25 years old, family support for people who have a loved one struggling with addiction and a live-in drug and alcohol rehabilitation centre for both men and women.

"Substance abuse is one of the most prevalent issues facing this generation. It knows no socio-economic boundaries," says Helen Glen, Donor Relationships Manager.
"Our services aim to eliminate self-destructive behaviour by meeting the needs of the whole person, not only dealing with the addiction but also by rebuilding the self-image, work ethic, spiritual awareness and relationships, in the life of a young person," she said.
To date, King's gold coin fundraising days have covered the cost of changing the lives of five young people a year as they enter the Induction phase of the Teen Challenge QLD drug & alcohol rehabilitation program.
