There is never a dull moment at King's and last Friday was no different! After a fun but challenging first week back at school after lockdown, our amazing Primary staff were keen to brighten everyone's morning. Dressed in fluoro fashion, superhero suits and wacky wigs, they brought joy and big smiles (behind the masks) as our students were cheerfully greeted to school at the drop off zone. In High School, our PC classes were all treated to chocolate to sweeten their week. We appreciate our amazing staff and King's community, who consistently go above and beyond to bring joy to the lives of our students.
Recent COVID restrictions in Queensland presented even more challenges for many families, and our College staff remained acutely aware of the extra pressures this placed on our community. Our Principal wanted to acknowledge the exceptional support from King's parents with a small gift and the reminder to take 'take a break' whenever possible. Accompanying the parcel were handwritten cards from students to their parents, filled with thoughtful words, along with a note of thanks from Reedy Creek's Principal, Mr Meyers.' It was heartwarming to see the reaction from parents as they received these gifts at pick-up time on Monday. In the days that followed, King's staff were encouraged to receive an outpouring of kind messages from our parents, who had clearly enjoyed the gesture.

National Science Week is Australia’s annual celebration of science and technology. This year’s theme was 'Food: Different by Design,' in honour of the United Nations International Year of Fruit and Vegetables. King's loves participating in this initiative every year as a way to explore the incredibly complex and interesting world God has created, through the lens of science.
This year our library collaborated with the High School Science department to facilitate interactive science activities for students in the Main Library's communal spaces. Mr Holman, from King's science teaching team, ran experiments for students during lunch breaks, while Mrs Roberts, King's Librarian, conducted experiments in Year 5 and 6 library lessons. Miss Baldwin, King's Head of Science in High School (with the help of her colleagues), staged some jaw-dropping experiments to show the impressive strength of eggshells. These were recorded and viewed by High School students in class and can also be viewed via the buttons below. Primary classes incorporated a range of science activities into their week, and Year 6 enjoyed investigating robotics, water rockets, fruit electrical circuits and handmade water filtration systems.
Standing on Eggs Experiment Squeezing Eggs Experiment Downward Force on Half EggshellsStudents from King's Years 7 and 10 History classes competed in the Australian History Competition last term. This was the first time our College had students participate and King's Christian College students performed very well. Special congratulations to King's Year 10 student, Eden Moes, who received a High Distinction and was awarded State Champion! All recipients will receive their results and certificates in class, due to COVID restrictions. Congratulations to all students who participated and gave their best efforts.

King’s Year 12 student, Kai Prideaux, is still pinching himself at the fact he has just been awarded the flagstone scholarship for one of Melbourne’s best universities.
Kai was among thousands of applicants from across Australia who applied for the University of Melbourne's Hansen Scholarship which is only awarded to 20 talented undergraduate students each year. This scholarship covers course fees, student accommodation and an allowance, as well as personal support. This opportunity means more to Kai than just financial help – for him, it represents ‘a door into his future and the chance to live in Melbourne, closer to his extended family.’
After months of intensive testing, periods of anxious waiting and then a final Zoom interview with the Hansen Scholarship Board, Kai received the life-changing call last Friday. “It was almost anticlimactic after such a long wait; it was surreal but such a huge relief,” Kai said.
Kai will commence his tertiary studies with an Undergraduate Degree in Commerce or Arts next year, followed by a Postgraduate Law degree, with ambitious career dreams of owning or partnering a law firm one day, and eventually becoming a Judge. With his strong work ethic and dedication, we are believing he will succeed. Congratulations Kai!
Talented student musician, Christine Lin (Year 10), performed for the first time in the piano group of the Gold Coast Eisteddfod recently. Christine began by demonstrating her skills in the Open Age Baroque Solo category, where she successfully placed 1st overall. She then performed in the Grade 8/Certificate of Performance Solo and placed 2nd. Christine later competed in the Open Age Championship and was awarded 1st Place - an outstanding achievement! It was a very competitive event this year and every pianist played their pieces beautifully, expressing different composer’s stylistic language. Christine received the top award for her display of confidence on the piano throughout her engaging performance, and the judges noted her 'precision and accurate technical control and the way her phrases were shaped lyrically and differentiated expressively.' Congratulations Christine on your achievements in this year's Eisteddfod!
Noah's Ark enjoyed a week of multicultural celebrations and a special dress-up day to support one of our partnering charities working in Uganda, 100% Hope. In each Noah's Ark classroom, children brought in items from home and shared stories from their own culture as they learned more about the diverse world we live in. Throughout their fun-filled week, they also enjoyed reading stories, watching clips, and singing songs from around the world.
The Gold Coast Show presents a unique opportunity for artists of all ages to enter their creative works into the annual art competition. Every year, popular Show categories include Photography, Painting, Indigenous Art, Drawing, Glass Craft, Ceramics, Pottery and Sculpture. One of the favourites for young students is the Primary School Scarecrow Competition, where students from across the Gold Coast collaborate within their school to produce inventive scarecrows.
King's Year 3 student, Matthew Hawthorn, was inspired to design and sculpt a scarecrow named 'Kingston' for this year's Gold Coast Show. With the help of the Primary Art Department and his peers from Year 3 and Year 6, Kingston came to life during many hours of work within their lunch breaks. Kingston is expressive and lively and he looks forward to heading to this year's Gold Coast show to be judged. Good luck Matthew and Kingston!
King's Primary students are blessed with an array of activities that definitely take the "boring" out of breaktimes, and are also great for students who may struggle in the playground. These free optional activities occur every day for different ages and have been thoughtfully designed to build on a range of skills including art, spanish, chess, table tennis, lego, jump rope, and more! These sessions run during both first and second break by teachers and Chaplains, and take place in The Hub or specialist classrooms and the full list of locations is available on the screens around campus.
All High School students are now entering that time of term where life begins to feel busy as they balance assessment deadlines with the need to study for in-class or Exam Block exams. Students will need to allocate and use their time carefully.
Parents, at this stage of the term, your child should be able to tell you:
In preparation for exams, you should be seeing your son or daughter creating resources for themselves such as summary notes from their textbook, flash cards and visual flowcharts. They should be practising writing extended responses and revising content. We recommend that students complete revision tasks, look at marking criteria, structure and conditions. Timed practice tasks at home are vital contributors for success. It is also very beneficial for students to form study groups.
If you are not seeing evidence of your child working very hard in preparation for assessment, please partner with teachers by discussing the need to set goals, work hard and consistently apply themselves to their studies. You may want to consider offering accountability and rewards to help motivate your child.
Some questions parents could ask include:
If students do well to prepare, they prepare to do well.
With restrictions to school assemblies over the past fortnight, Mr Malcolm and our Chaplaincy team had to reimagine Chapels, and so instead of live services, they created engaging videos to play in King's classrooms during Chapel times. The hard work from our dedicated Chaplaincy team ensured students could still receive an incredible message about God, from a different setting.
In High School this fortnight, in-class Chapels continued with the Term 3 theme 'Jesus has qualified the disqualified' and students enjoyed hearing from guest video presenter, Shane Willard, as well as the chaplaincy team. Primary School carried on their fun Olympic Games-inspired theme 'God for Gold,' with a focus on the verse Hebrews 12:1 - "Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us." We hope to see live chapels return to the auditorium in the near future!
Each term this year, King's Libraries have run a reading challenge during our library lessons for our primary students to encourage the love of reading for pleasure and learning. Our students in Years 5 and 6 recently received their prizes from the Term 2 Reading Challenge. Congratulations to all of our winners!
