A sea of colour washed over our Year 3 classrooms on Tuesday when our students dressed up to represent a variety of countries from around the world as part of their Integrated Studies unit, Celebrating Culture and Community. Our much-loved annual Multicultural Day event was a culmination of their Term 2 studies and, throughout the day, students were immersed in a range of exciting activities including making masks, creating cultural art and participating in a range of multicultural dances.
Year 3 students have enjoyed investigating a variety of indigenous cultures from around the world including Maori, Maasai, Inuit, Ainu and Amazonian cultures. They used their research skills to discover facts and to reflect on how these cultures are similar and different to our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. The students also created a digital project about their chosen culture, which they presented to their classmates. As part of this unit, students also considered how King’s Kids can show God’s love by respecting and supporting other cultures throughout His incredible world.
Primary Students Live to Give to Help Less Fortunate
10 June 2021
+24
As a College, we regularly put our Foundational Values into practice through our missions program. Missions are a practical way that students learn the value of service and generosity, as they engage in fundraising activities. Missions also teach compassion as we put the needs of others ahead of our own and as we use some of our blessings to bless those less fortunate. Live to Give Day is our main missions event for Prep - Year 4 students and, on Thursday 10 June, Pimpama students and teachers thoroughly enjoyed a morning of carnival-style fun. This year’s event was a cashless alternative to previous years and instead of purchasing food and products, students participated in activities to ‘win' tokens. There were various activity stations on offer in P-2, with something fun for everyone to choose including an obstacle course, painting, skipping, origami, Lego creations, ring toss, hair braiding and much more! Our Year 4 students designed and created an incredible array of arcade games, inviting the Year 3 students to view and play their completed designs. Students 'donated' their tokens into the jar of their chosen charity which provided a meaningful connection to these organisations during the event. Funds were raised via Parent Portal prior to the event and King's would like to thank our families who donated to help these incredible charities:
Manna Ministries, India
Faith that Moves Mountains, Thailand
Lifesaving Chaplaincy, Australia
100% Hope, Uganda
Year 4 Instrumental Showcase
18 June 2021
The Year 4 Instrumental Music Showcase was held in the College Community Centre on Thursday, 10 June. It was such a rewarding experience for the budding young students who were able to perform in their first concert on their orchestral instruments to a live audience of Mums and Dads and Year 3 students. It was encouraging to have parents, friends and teachers turn out for the event, which was held during school hours. Our young student musicians thoroughly enjoyed playing for the audience and their enthusiasm for learning a musical instrument was evident.
The Year 6 leaders have written this article about Dr Justin Coulson recent visit to King's Pimpama:
Dr Justin Coulson from Happy Families came in to talk to us about healthy relationships with our friends. We heard how having connections with people is very important and they are not that hard to find. He asked us to do some practical exercises, like find a student in Year 5 and find out what we had in common with them, an incident that changed our lives and if we would rather be pretty, rich or smart. This actually helped me connect with the student that came up to me.
Mr Coulson also talked about how to have lifelong connections with friends because of the little things that we can bond over. I enjoyed the way he presented it because it made me feel like I could be mature about my feelings. A very interesting comment he made was that people sometimes get involved in drama cyclones, which is when things get a bit out of hand.
We really enjoyed Mr Coulson’s talk because he presented it in a fun way and it is relevant in our daily lives.

Practical Science Gives Students Real Life Experience
16 June 2021
+1
Year 9 science students got the chance to experience real-life, practical science by dissecting a cow's eye.
The students learned about the parts of the eye and had to identify the sclera, tapetum, optic nerve, blindspot, vitreous humour, lens, iris and cornea. As part of the experiment, they had to find the whites (or sclera), the tough, outer covering of the eyeball and the fat and muscle surrounding the eye. They also had to find the covering over the front of the eye (the cornea). When the cow was alive, the cornea was clear. However, in the experiment, the cornea appeared cloudy. Many of the students found it interesting that they could hold and look through the cornea and see the iris, the coloured part of the eye, and they discovered that the pupil was the dark oval in the middle of the iris.
Podium Position for King's Pimpama Poet
9 June 2021
"Either write something worth reading or do something worth writing."
- Benjamin Franklin
Congratulations to Year 9 student, Taylyn Birch, who achieved a podium finish in the recent Write4Fun writing and poetry competition. Taylyn's poem Stormy Serenity secured her a third-place win out of 7500 entries nationally.
Storm Serenity
The opera of the skies perturb those below, Embracing all in its vociferous melody. Diagonal sheets of rain cascade; merciless; unforgiving. Like the fragile limbs of the frail and feeble, Trees writhe and flounder. And with futile efforts to resist, The squall carries them away with their groans of agony- Nothing more than ammunition within the gale.
However, as the livid, bruised clouds begin to dwindle, The pure, azure sky engulfs the land in serenity. Eruptions of emerald green envelope the terrain- Carpets of luxuriant nature. The rain traces sweet paths through those in need, Through those starving bodies, sucked of their nourishing liquids. And a band of colour hangs in the sky, Declaring new liberty, to those who don’t grieve, Declaring new liberty, to those who believe.
Taylyn, who enjoys writing in different styles and genres, decided to enter the Write4Fun competition and give it a shot.
"I don't see many advertisements for writing competitions and when it was promoted on Compass to the students I said to myself, I'll give it a go," she said.
After receiving email notification of her success in the first round of Write4Fun, Taryn was inspired to enter other competitions. She has since submitted a short story to Queensland’s longest-running literary competition, the IEU-QNT Literary Competition, for students in Years 5 - 9. This competition has also been promoted to students via Compass.
Taylyn is thankful to King's teachers for sharing these events with the students and giving them the opportunity to participate. She is looking forward to seeing her poem Storm Serenity published, alongside other winning entries, in a book entitled 'The Write Note', which will be in King's library by November 2021.
Taylyn received $150, an engraved third place pen and a Write4Fun Stationery Gift Pack.
Although Taylyn enjoys creative writing, she dreams of one day being a surgeon.
Maxim Baruksopulo Performed in Carmen's Children Choir at HOTA
18 June 2021
In May, Year 7 student Maxim Baruksopulo auditioned for the world's most popular Spanish opera, Carmen, and was selected for the Carmen Children's Choir, performing on stage next to some of Australia's finest opera singers: Angela Hogan and Dimity Shepherd.
Maxim has been training really hard, going to every rehearsal since May. He has been learning to sing in French as well, which is a new language to him. Maxim is a dedicated student, striving to do his very best as he represents his school and the Pimpama campus.
Maxim's love of music is an inspiration and he would like to inspire others to join the choirs at school, start learning a musical instrument or just simply strive for the best at any subject.
Year 8s Learn About Japanese Culture
17 June 2021
+3
On Wednesday, our Year 8 students travelled to the Reedy Creek campus to participate in a Japanese cultural day with their peers. The day was a culmination of their study of Shogunate Japan for History this term. Students were treated to a performance by a Japanese drumming band - and then given the opportunity to demonstrate their own musical talents! Students were also able to take part in a Japanese tea ceremony and gain an understanding of its Christian origins. The day was creatively completed with Year 8 learning to write the Japanese characters of 'King', 'Create' and 'Love' in calligraphy as well as making an origami samurai helmet.
All of the activities helped Year 8 to realise the significance of culture within Japanese society and how important it is for the leaders of Japan, past and present, to protect it.

Prep to Year 2 Carnival Event at Pimpama
15 June 2021
The Prep to Year 2 carnival got underway with loads of excitement and fun in the last week of Term 2. Great sportsmanship was seen on the track and field before a quick and dramatic storm decided to rain on their parade. With three-quarters of the event completed the organisers had to end the carnival due to the weather event. We did, however, manage to get some great photos and a highlights package to share with you. Thank you to all the parents who were able to attend. We love having you back on campus at events.

King’s Christian College had a mixed night of debating on 2 June, winning one out of their four debates. One team (KCP1) remains undefeated champions at the end of the season. The intermediate team debated at AB Paterson College and the junior teams debated at St Stephen’s College. This was the second round of 'Secret Subject' topics and the last debate of the regular season. All students represented the College well. The moot was: ‘Protesting is an effective way to create change.’ The finals series starts next semester on 14 July (Week One) at All Saint’s Anglican College (Junior A) and AB Paterson College (Intermediate B).
Two junior teams (KCP1 & KCP2) are firmly locked into the first finals round yet. Unfortunately, one of our junior teams (KCP3) and the intermediate B team (KCP1) have just an outside chance, depending on other results.

Primary Debating News
18 June 2021
This week King's Pimpama embarked on their final cross-campus debate for Semester 1. Our friends from Reedy Creek joined us once again and an amazing night was had by all.
It was so encouraging for all of the coaches to see just how far our champion debaters have come over the season. Rebuttals are the hardest part of the sport, but our team absolutely nailed them!
It was awesome to have parent spectators join once again and I know our debaters thoroughly enjoyed competing in front of an audience. I look forward to seeing further success and growth over Semester 2.
