Instead, our focus is on nurturing students' character, growth, and resilience, supported by encouragement from King's community and the application of our faith-based values. This week's message is available via the button below:
Our Year 7 students embarked on an enriching camp experience at Alexandra Park Conference Centre on the Sunshine Coast, from 4-6 March. The Year 7 camp is a particularly significant milestone, bringing the cohort together off campus for the first time as High Schoolers. Our Camp activities provide many opportunities for students to face physical, emotional, and spiritual growth while encouraging social interaction with their peers. At King's, camps serve as a cornerstone of our ethos, facilitating moments for students to forge deeper connections with both their peers and their faith. During their three-day adventure on the Sunshine Coast, our Year 7s engaged in a variety of thrilling activities and team-building exercises. Highlights included exhilarating challenges like raft building, archery and high ropes. The spirit of camaraderie was especially evident in the House challenges including human-hungry hippos, the fun team relay, House Battle capture the Flag and tug-a-War. In a fiercely contested competition, Rayleigh House emerged victorious. As the heartbeat and mission of every King's camp, it was also heartwarming to see so many Year 7 students engaging in the nightly Chapel services, worshipping God and reflecting on the messages shared.
King's Year 12 Legal Studies class recently visited the Brisbane Supreme Court Library and were given a comprehensive tour of how both primary and secondary sources are stored in the library, including journals written by legal experts and State and federal legislation. They found it intriguing to witness how barristers utilise the library to gather and synthesise information for their important cases. One of the Supreme Court Librarians conducted a private seminar for the class on how to navigate the Supreme Court Library Database, which offers access to a multitude of resources when researching legal topics and cases. This experience proved invaluable in equipping students with valuable skills and resources to tackle their IA2 – legal inquiry report which focuses on a current issue in Queensland or Australia that requires legal reform.
"Eager and expectant for God to move, our College Executive Captains gathered during the early hours of the morning of March 1, to travel to Canberra for the much-awaited Compass Leadership Conference. Spoiler alert! It turned out to be an incredibly enriching and unforgettable experience, securing itself as one of our favourite highlights of our senior year. Something special happens when you gather a large group of gifted young Christian leaders in a room who are determined and called to make their God-gifted dreams a reality. And we were soon to find out...
Upon arriving, we immediately began getting to know our fellow students who were also eager for what the weekend had in store. Our College leaders did not waste any opportunities to learn from and share the unique experiences that made each of us different, yet united in our aspirations to see the good news of Jesus touch the hearts of our students and spread into the wider school community. We were so privileged enough to learn from each other and the amazing guest speakers who had lots to share, as we were eager to listen. Several takeaways came from the talks on ‘how to change a culture for Christianity 101’, and Dr Graham Staton’s memorable lesson on how to read our Bibles, entitled ‘Christians Can’t Fly’. We also got to explore significant Canberra landmarks such as the Australian War Memorial, the Australian Centre for Christianity and Culture, and Parliament House. Each visit reminded us of our nation's history and values, reinforcing the importance of leadership in shaping our collective future. Beyond the formal activities, the conference also allowed for moments of fun and relaxation. Exploring the city, participating in a barn dance, and engaging in various recreational activities provided opportunities to unwind and bond with fellow attendees.
Our athletes made a splash at the annual Queensland Beach Volleyball Schools Cup which was held at Coolangatta last weekend, with 30 athletes representing King's across 10 teams. This highly-anticipated competition attracts schools from across the State and the 2024 event saw 55 schools compete across the two days. Our teams faced some tough matches through a mix of hot and windy conditions and successfully clinched three medals over the two days, with King's finishing the competition in 7th place overall.
Congratulations to our teams on these great results:
On Saturday, 9 March, the King's Rugby community was buzzing with excitement as a large contingent of students, parents, coaching staff and teachers embarked on a trip to Brisbane for a thrilling Super Rugby encounter. The highly-anticipated match unfolded at Suncorp Stadium, pitting the Queensland Reds against New Zealand’s Waikato Chiefs, in Round 3 of the competition. Under the guidance of their new coach, Les Kiss, the Reds made a strong start and maintained their lead as they headed into the halftime break. However, the formidable Chiefs made a convincing comeback in the second half, putting the Reds on edge. It was a tense battle until the very end, with the Kiwi visitors appearing poised to snatch the victory. The Reds intensified their defence in the final moments to secure the victory with a final score of 25-19. King’s group of Reds supporters were united by full-time celebrations, cementing the end to a great evening of camaraderie. Beyond the excitement of the game itself, the trip offered a chance for our school families to forge stronger bonds outside of campus, and we thank King’s Sports Department for making this memorable experience possible!
We are excited to share the outstanding success of our Year 8 student, Keira Burgermeister, at the Interschool Showjumping event held in Brisbane in February 2024. Keira was keen to represent King’s against 15 other schools and introduce her beautiful new horse, Sandy, who adorned the College crest and made an impressive debut in the 70cm jump category. Sandy showed no signs of first-time nerves and the duo soared through the course with finesse. Keira and Sandy’s exceptional performance led them to the jump-off round at 80cm, where they clinched the 3rd position out of a competitive field of 20 participants. They continued to dazzle in the Super 2 phase and secured another 3rd place finish. Keira’s consistency and skill throughout the day earned her the prestigious title of RESERVE CHAMPION and her success is a testament to her dedication to her sport and we eagerly anticipate her continued success in future competitions. Congratulations Keira!
Year 11 student, Adrian Attwell, has always aspired to reach for the stars and last week he took one step closer as he navigated his first solo flight. Since January 2023, Adrian has been studying for his Recreational Pilot's license through the Gold Coast Sport Flying Club in Pimpama, propelling him toward his dream career in commercial aviation. Adrian has now completed 19 of the 30 hours of instruction, and recently undertook his first unassisted flight. Adrian’s passion for aviation was passed down from his grandfather, a seasoned aviator, who introduced his grandson to the wonders of flying. Together they have spent hours discussing planes, aerodynamics, and the mechanics of flight which fuelled Adrian's ambitions. His father also shares a keen interest in aviation and enjoys seeing Adrian pursue this career path. Adrian imagines himself flying for humanitarian organisations like Mission Aviation Fellowship and the Royal Flying Doctor Service, and hopes to fly internationally for a commercial airline. Adrian will finish Year 12 before he embarks on the next phase of his journey, where he is considering a gap year with the Airforce as a strategic step towards his ultimate goal of enrolling in Flight School full-time.
Congratulations Adrian for your pursuit of excellence as you hone your skills and master the art of aviation. We are keen to watch your future take flight where the sky is not the limit but only the beginning.
The Year 12 Digital Art class is completing a unit exploring different types of lenses and their uses. We recently went on an excursion to use various lenses in diverse locations. Lahan has been very motivated and his work has an abstract nature to the photos even though they are obviously recognisable subjects if one looks hard enough. Please follow the Art Department on Instagram @kingscollegeart as your support is greatly appreciated.
We are all set for an incredible Easter Fest event as we prepare to celebrate Easter with our College families and friends. The purpose of these groups is to provide King's parents with a platform to build connection and community with one another. We make every effort to ensure these groups only include current parents, however, they are not closely monitored by King's staff and we rely on the support of our members to ensure that posts are kind and considerate. These Facebook groups are also not intended to replace Compass as our main source of College information and we ask that parents regularly check Compass for important news and information. We also have other groups for secondhand uniform sales, our P&F and extracurricular programs.
If you are new to King's, or yet to join your year level group, follow the link below to find your group link and send a request to join. You must include your name on our parent database, as well as your child's name and class, to help our admin team find your record.
