Review: Words of War by Poetry in Action
For the first time, Year 10 English students launched into their study of poetry by experiencing the live re-enactment of World War I poetry by performance artists Poetry in Action.
Words of War was a powerful live performance that plunged our Year 11 audience into the emotional and psychological world of Wilfred Owen, one of the most celebrated war poets in the English language. Year 10 English students were immersed in these powerful words through visually stunning storytelling. Poetry in Action's high-energy performance and striking verse, brought Owen’s poetry to life, exploring not only the brutal realities of World War I but also the lasting power of language to warn, provoke and heal.
The show masterfully combined biography, historical context, and dramatic recitation to give students a visceral understanding of Owen’s internal conflict, his role as a soldier-poet, and the haunting beauty of lines like “The poetry is in the pity.” By dramatising key moments of Owen’s life and work, the performance invited students to engage deeply with the themes of trauma, identity, and protest.
More than just a literary experience, Words of War was a bold reminder that poetry remains one of the most truthful ways to communicate human suffering and resilience. With passion and clarity, the performance helped students appreciate the raw power of words, not just on the page, but spoken aloud in all their rhythm and rage.
On Tuesday, 6 May, we gathered to celebrate the Year 11 Honours Service, recognising students for their outstanding achievements in Academics, Performing Arts, and Service from Semester 2, 2024, and Unit 1 of Year 11.
Academic Honours were awarded to students who achieved 80% or higher in two or more subjects, a fantastic reflection of their effort and commitment. This year saw a noticeable rise in students achieving Gold Academic Honours for attaining 80% in five subjects or maintaining a 90%+ average, reflecting their growing dedication and focus in their studies.
Arts Honours celebrated students involved in Drama, Dance, and Music, including participation in groups such as the College Choir, Dance Troupe, King’s Souldiers & Rock Band, as well as the Queensland Theatre’s Scene Project and Gold Coast Drama Fest. Community Service Honours were presented to students who gave generously of their time through service at King’s and in the wider community, including regional and overseas mission trips.
We are incredibly proud of these students and the way they continue to live out our foundational values with excellence and purpose.

A Day of Innovation and Enterprise at our School BiZ Day
Our recent School BIZ Day was a vibrant celebration of creativity, teamwork, and entrepreneurial flair. With over 180 students attending the event, the atmosphere on campus was buzzing with excitement. More than 50 student-run business stalls were brought to life by our talented Year 9 Business students, along with the enthusiastic members of our Trail Blazers Club from Years 7 and 8.
From concept to customer, students embraced the challenge of creating their own business models and transforming them into real-life ventures. From handmade products and delicious treats to inventive services and eye-catching branding, it was inspiring to see theory come alive through such innovative and practical learning.
A huge thank you goes out to our wonderful school community who came along to support, shop, and encourage our young entrepreneurs. Your involvement helps create experiences that not only enrich learning but also build confidence and real-world skills.
What an unforgettable day filled with innovation, collaboration, and entrepreneurial spirit – we can’t wait to see what our future business leaders come up with next!
The school hosted a delightful Mother's Day event filled with fun, creativity, and quality time for mums and their children. The day featured a variety of hands-on activities, including giving relaxing hand massages, crafting beautiful beaded bracelets, and making floral-scented creams together. Children and their mums also enjoyed designing and decorating paper crowns, getting messy with colourful playdough, painting mini masterpieces, and creating keepsake crafts. A cheerful energy surrounded the event as families moved from station to station, making lasting memories in a joyful celebration of our mums.
We would like to thank Mrs Karen Wendijk and her students for the beautiful art installation for our Mother's Day event.
A massive thank you to our wonderful school community for your incredible support last term! Together, we raised over $11 500 for our two LIFE Event charities: Rescue Mission Thailand and You Have a Friend. What an amazing achievement!
Next week, we’re excited to launch our LIFE Events for Term 2. In the Primary School, we’ll be fundraising for Bali Christian College with our much-loved Superhero Day, and in the High School, we’ll be supporting Teen Challenge through Jersey Day. We’re thrilled to share that Ps. Gayle Dwije from Bali Christian College recently informed us that the college and church have been blessed with a new building to rent and renovate. The funds we raise this term will go directly towards equipping this space with the purchase of air-conditioning units, desks, and construction of a new playground for the students. Meanwhile, the funds raised for Teen Challenge will help support youth as they participate in their life-changing program.
We encourage everyone in our school community to get involved and support these events through online gold coin donations via the Parent Portal for both primary and high school, and through purchases at the LIFE BBQ in the following ways:
Once again, thank you for your ongoing support of the school community. We look forward to updating you in the coming weeks with a report from the events and the final figures raised this term.

Year 12 Dance – A Celebration Through Movement
As they near graduation, our Year 12 Dance students are diving into a unit themed “Celebration”. Through their choreography, they’re exploring themes of gratitude, joy, nostalgia, and hope—using dance to reflect on their personal journeys and honour milestones. Their pieces aim to connect emotionally with audiences and will be performed at community events, cultural festivals, or special school celebrations.
Year 11 Dance – Dance and Wellbeing
This term’s focus is on the impact of dance on physical, emotional, mental, and social health. Students are discovering how movement can enhance communication, expression, fitness, focus and resilience. As part of the unit, they’ll visit the Prep classes at King’s Primary to teach a fun dance routine—applying their knowledge while promoting fitness and creativity among our youngest learners.
Year 10 Dance – Dance Around the World
Year 10 students are immersing themselves in traditional and contemporary dance styles from 15 different cultures, from Russian and Thai to Japanese and Greek. A standout part of the unit has been the study of First Nations dance, with a focus on the world-renowned Bangarra Dance Theatre. Students have been deeply moved by Bangarra’s storytelling, which blends Indigenous culture with contemporary dance, inspiring reflection on identity, history, and connection to Country.
Year 9 Dance – Storytelling Through Dance
Students have chosen a children’s storybook as the inspiration for their own original dance pieces. They’ve been working through the choreographic process: identifying a theme, creating and structuring their dance, and teaching their choreography to a group. The unit culminates in a performance featuring costumes, props, and music, all designed to enhance the storytelling and showcase their creativity, leadership, and teamwork.
MUSIC
ACO Excursion – From Bach to The Beach Boys
On 12 May, students attended an unforgettable performance by the Australian Chamber Orchestra. The concert offered a unique blend of classical and contemporary music, from Bach to The Beach Boys. A highlight for many was the performance on the Theremin—an instrument played without touch, which produced haunting and mysterious tones that fascinated the students.
Years 10–12: Composing Narrative and Identity
Senior students have been creating original compositions that tell a story or reflect personal identity. These works demonstrate a deep understanding of musical elements and structure, and span a wide range of genres including rock, alternative, film music, musical theatre, pop, classical, bossa nova and blues. Each composition showcases students’ creativity and their grasp of genre-specific characteristics.
Choir and Rock Band – Ready to Shine
Our College Choir and Rock Band are in full rehearsal mode, preparing for the Gold Coast Eisteddfod next term. Recently, the Rock Band performed at Biz Day (Week 4), electrifying the crowd with covers from legendary bands like The Foo Fighters, The Killers, Fleetwood Mac, and The Offspring. Their confident, high-energy performance was a definite highlight!
Years 7 & 8 – Emotion in Music
Junior students have taken on a GarageBand composition project, creating music to reflect emotions such as excitement and sadness. By exploring musical elements like texture, tempo, rhythm, and timbre, they developed emotionally expressive tracks. They also performed group ukulele and vocal pieces, building their confidence and musical coordination.
Year 9 – Film Music in Focus
Our Year 9 musicians are exploring film composition, learning how to create original scores that match mood, action, and atmosphere. Through this unit, they’re gaining insight into how music enhances storytelling on screen.
Free Music Theory Lessons Now Available
To support classroom learning and private tuition, we’re offering free music theory lessons for students in Years 7–12.
Room C27 Music Classroom
Every Wednesday, 7.30am
These sessions are tailored to individual needs and help students improve their understanding of how theory supports musical composition and analysis. We strongly encourage all music students to attend!
