King's Academic Excellence - Da Vinci Decathlon Teams from Reedy Creek, Pimpama, and Logan Village recently represented King’s Christian College at both the regional and state da Vinci Decathlon competitions as part of our new Academic Excellence Initiative. Over the past two weeks, these students achieved commendable results across a variety of challenging disciplines.
The da Vinci Decathlon is a prestigious academic competition named after Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519), one of the world’s greatest thinkers and scholars. Renowned for his ability to perceive the interconnectedness of knowledge, da Vinci approached learning with lifelong passion and an unrelenting curiosity to explore the unknown. Reflecting his legacy, the competition places a strong emphasis on higher-order thinking skills, problem solving, and creativity.
Students competed in teams of eight across ten disciplines: engineering, mathematics and chess, code breaking, art and poetry, science, English, ideation, creative producers, cartography, and legacy.
Participation in the da Vinci Decathlon provides high-performing students with opportunities to extend their learning beyond the regular school curriculum and to collaborate with like-minded peers from across the state. It challenges them to think critically, work creatively under pressure, and apply knowledge across a range of subject areas in innovative ways.
This inaugural group of students has set a strong benchmark as we launch our Academic Excellence Initiative, showcasing the talent, curiosity, and dedication thriving across our campuses.

We are thrilled to celebrate a groundbreaking achievement by our first-ever cohort of students who have successfully completed the Certificate III in Aviation (Remote Pilot) course at Kings Christian College, Reedy Creek Campus.
Friday 16 May marked a major milestone as 11 pioneering Year 12 students completed their final practical flying assessments, bringing to a close month’s of rigorous training and preparation. The program, delivered in partnership with Skills Generation (RTO), equipped students with the skills and knowledge needed to safely and professionally operate drones in commercial and regulated environments.
To earn their Remote Pilot Licence (RePL), students had to pass a demanding 144-question theory exam, requiring a minimum score of 80% - a standard set by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA). In addition to this written assessment, students were also required to demonstrate their flying competency through a practical test, simulating real-world drone operations.
Their achievement not only reflects their technical capability and commitment but also positions them for exciting opportunities in the rapidly growing drone industry—including roles in surveying, agriculture, media, emergency services, and more.
“This is more than just flying drones—it’s about preparing students for the future of technology and aviation,” said Mr Askin, course coordinator. “These students have shown incredible focus and professionalism. They’ve taken on a nationally recognised qualification while still in high school. That’s something worth celebrating!”
As we look ahead, these certified remote pilots will now take part in advanced drone flying challenges and collaborative missions designed to extend their skills further.
We congratulate this trailblazing group on their success and look forward to seeing where their drone journey takes them next. The sky is truly the limit!

We had a wonderful turnout for our recent Community Working Bee (Saturday 10 May), with 29 adults and children coming together to help establish our new garden area. It was a productive and joyful morning, filled with teamwork and a shared sense of purpose.
Thanks to the College’s maintenance team, we now have four beautifully constructed flower beds. These were positioned and filled with soil, ready for planting. Our families enthusiastically contributed their time and skills—painting, cleaning, building, and modifying various elements to bring Stage One of the garden project to life.
A highlight of the day was the installation of a solar-powered pond in one of the garden beds, which has become a stunning feature of the space.
The event was a true celebration of community spirit within the ELC. We wrapped up the day with a BBQ to thank our parent community, and the response was overwhelmingly positive—with several families already asking when the next working bee will be!
On Wednesday, 21 May, our Pre Prep children embarked on their very first school excursion to Country Paradise Parklands in Nerang to celebrate ‘Under 8’s Week’ in partnership with TAFE Queensland. The 2025 theme, "Unleashing Scientific Thinking Through Play," set the tone for a day filled with engaging, hands-on learning experiences.
Children participated in a diverse range of activities designed to stimulate curiosity and creativity, including woodworking, nature mixing, lava lamp creation (using water, oil, and food colouring), ice and melt play, obstacle courses, light refraction and colour play, sound wave exploration, face painting, slime play, balloon rockets, and dough/clay volcano building.
We were pleased to have our Noah’s Ark school-based trainees join us on the day, assisting with the various activities and supporting our children’s learning and enjoyment. Their involvement was both valuable and appreciated.
A highlight for many of the children was the bus ride—an exciting first-time experience for several of them! We were also grateful for the generous support of our parent helpers, whose presence ensured a smooth and successful outing.
It was a joyful day of discovery and play beyond the walls of our centre, and one that we trust will remain a special memory for our Pre Prep children for years to come.
The subject of Drama and its co-curricular siblings are having such a busy year in 2025. Read on to find out more...
Curricular Drama
Year 9 Drama - students learnt the dramatic elements through improvisation workshops. Creating a portfolio that demonstrates their understanding of the elements through reflecting on learnt performance skills, role playing, devising and more.
Senior Drama (Years 11 & 12) have completed their first units for this year and have done some truly superb and innovative work in performances of ‘Mr Melancholy’ and ‘Snapshots from Home’, as well as devising original dramatic concepts in the styles of Social Commentary Theatre and Contemporary Non-natural Theatre. And this term they have already embarked on their next explorations in Realism and Contemporary Hybrid theatrical forms – stay tuned for their next performances in these units in August. For our Year 12 students, it will be their last time on our King’s Reedy Creek stage!
Co-Curricular Drama
This year we are staging our bi-annual Trilogy Projects, featuring our students in three ‘divisions’ - Senior, Intermediate and Junior. These projects will be performed for our King’s community in early Term 3 before we then set off to complete in the Secondary Schools Drama Fest in August.
Senior Trilogy – is devising a reimagining of Macbeth, having participated in workshops with Ella Becroft from Red Leap Theatre in Auckland, as well as looking forward to working with Helen Stephens from Dead Puppet Society in June.
Intermediate Trilogy – has worked with playwright, David Burton to learn the art and craft of ‘Verbatim Theatre’ and have now conducted interviews to seek stories from our community on the topic of ‘Change’. We’ll spend the next few weeks developing those into stage action as well as including some other improvisations to flesh out this universal experience.
Junior Trilogy – is working from a heartfelt story book called ‘The Island' by Armin Greder, to portray an abstract physical interpretation of this powerful narrative, exploring ‘difference’ and ‘compassion’, and how care must be taken our collective reactions to those around us.
Excursions
We’ve taken two excursions to QPAC in Brisbane in Term 1, with students being inspired and amazed with two theatrical performances. In February we saw ‘Pride and Prejudice’ by Queensland Theatre, a truly entertaining interpretation of the original Jane Austen novel, which brought new comedic potential to a traditional story.
We finished Term 1 with a trip to see Dead Puppet Society’s reimagined ‘Peter and the Starcatcher’ which is the ‘prequel’ story to ‘Peter Pan’. Again, the performance featured extremely high production values with superb use of cutting-edge technology, humorous characters and high-quality acting and ensemble skills. We even got to chat with a few of the cast members after the show to hear more about their journeys as performers and the unique challenges of this stage show.
King's Souldiers
We’ve once again commenced our collaboration with Queensland Theatre in ‘The Scene Project’, working with a brand-new play called ‘Recalibrate’ by Sama and Hayden from Shock Therapy Arts. It cleverly and creatively explores three young people navigating their way through the maze of making some big life decisions around career choices and life pathways in their secondary education but reframed in a ‘speculative fiction’ style on stage. Bek Schmidt, a teacher artist from Queensland Theatre visited us last week to inspire and ignite some fresh interpretations of the story and characters, and we’ll present our response to that script in Brisbane for Queensland Theatre and other SE Qld schools in late August.
Parents, families and friends were delighted by the performances of students at the recent Twilight Studio Concerts. Students learning a musical instrument in private lessons are provided with the opportunity to perform at these concerts to gain valuable performance experience in a small, intimate setting. The younger learners have the chance to appreciate the older, more experienced performers, and the parents can see the growth of their child’s musical development and confidence.
The first concerts this season were performed across multiple venues and featured students learning Flute, Woodwind, Brass, Guitar and Vocals. The performances were delightful, and the audiences were so very encouraging. Thank you to the students who plucked up the courage to perform, and to our audiences for your valuable support. And a special thank you to the Instrumental Music team of teachers for your professional input in the students’ learning and providing this opportunity for us all.
Brass and Guitar
Woodwinds
Our talented Year 6 students have been learning the intricate art of wet felting — transforming raw fleece into vibrant felt. Although their creations are still in the early stages, they are already some of the most impressive we’ve seen.
Wet felting is a hands-on, multi-step process that requires bubble wrap, towels, soapy water, vinegar — and a whole lot of patience! Through this creative journey, students are not only developing new artistic skills but also deepening their understanding of important environmental issues.
This term, Year 6 has explored the topic of ghost netting — discarded fishing nets that pose a serious threat to marine life. Their artworks tell a powerful story, reminding us of our shared responsibility, as stewards of God’s creation, to care for and protect our oceans.
We can’t wait to see their finished pieces come to life!
Year 11 student Brodie Davey recently entered the Flotsam Homegrown Photo Challenge 2025 and was awarded the People’s Choice Award in two separate categories. Brodie has a strong passion for surf photography and is currently studying Digital Art, using it as a way to explore and develop his creative talents within school.
Judges were seeking images that captured the spirit of the Gold Coast or showcased the magic of our local surf culture—something Brodie did with skill and vision.
FOR PARENTS AND GUARDIANS

Student Spotlight: Year 11 Automotive Enthusiast
Name: Dallas Portland
Year: Year 11
Course: Certificate II in Automotive
Location: Gold Coast Trades College
Year 11 student, Dallas Portland, is currently undertaking a Certificate II in Automotive at Gold Coast Trades College and is thriving in the hands-on learning environment. With a lifelong passion for cars and machinery, his interest in automotive began early—growing up around trucks and diggers thanks to his dad and poppa’s work in the field.
He particularly enjoys the time spent in the workshop, where he's already had the opportunity to remove tyres, brakes, and even pull out and reassemble a car’s differential. These practical experiences are building his confidence and technical ability each week.
While he's keeping his options open (hoping to pursue rugby after school) he's also excited about a future in the automotive industry, particularly in heavy diesel machinery used in mining and forestry. He’s keen to work on diggers, dump trucks and similar equipment.
Through this course, he hopes to gain the skills needed to strip down and rebuild a car independently, without the need for help. Whether it's on the rugby field or in a workshop, he's a student with a clear sense of direction and a strong work ethic—ready to take on whatever comes next.
Connect & Grow Guest Speaker
KTTC hosted a guest speaker from Hands Up for Health, who delivered a presentation to the Year 10 & 11 students on various career opportunities within the health industry and the diverse pathways available for students.
Sport Development Program
The Sports Development Program trainees’ recent coaching visits to local primary schools have been a resounding success. Their session at Miami State School was particularly impressive, where they led engaging Minor Games activities focused on fundamental skills such as throwing, catching, and kicking for lower primary students. After putting significant effort into lesson planning and refining their delivery techniques, the trainees finally had the opportunity to put their skills into practice in a real-world setting — and they delivered exceptionally well. They’ve set a high standard for future sessions!
This past week, Thursday the 22nd and Friday the 23rd, the LIFE Team, comprised of students from grades 4-12, served their peers with the goal of raising money for the two charities that were chosen to be supported this term.
On Thursday, our high school students partnered with Teen Challenge to raise money by wearing sports jerseys for the day. The students had a Life BBQ at lunch where they could purchase a sausage sizzle, donut, or drink to raise funds in combination with a table tennis tournament and an incredible performance from the high school Rock Band.
Following our high school event, on Friday Primary School students supported Bali Christian College with Superhero Day, a dress up event partnered with a BBQ where students and teachers were encouraged to dress up as their favourite superhero.
Overall, both events were a massive success as a direct result of the support of students and families in our school community. Thank you for your support of these amazing charities! We look forward to sharing the total amount raised later this term.

3 - 4 April - Sunshine Coast Netball Tour
Vicki Wilson Jnr Squad travelled to the sunshine coast to participate in a coaching clinic with the Sunshine Coast Lightning and play Games against Metthew Flinders and Sieanna College.
23 April - 2 May - Sanix Japan Rugby 7’s
Over 10 unforgettable days, our Open Girls Rugby 7s team travelled to Japan to compete in one of the world’s leading School Rugby Tournaments whilst also immersing themselves in Japan’s rich culture and vibrant sights.
The tour began with some exciting adventures in Tokyo, where the girls explored iconic landmarks such as Tokyo Tower, Shibuya Crossing, and even spent a day enjoying the magic of Tokyo Disneyland. These moments created lasting memories and strengthened team bonds ahead of the competition.
The squad then travelled to Fukuoka to compete in the prestigious Sanix Japan Rugby 7s Tournament. Facing elite international opposition, including the eventual champions and runners-up, our girls fought bravely on Day 1 in the pool stage, but were edged out of championship contention. Undeterred, they bounced back on Day 2, finishing the tournament in 5th place with three wins from five matches—a result that reflects their grit, growth, and determination.
While the on-field performance was impressive, it was their off-field impact that truly stood out. Our girls formed friendships with teams from England, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, and more—spreading joy, laughter, and school spirit wherever they went. Their presence was infectious, and the memories and connections made will last a lifetime. We are incredibly proud of how our girls represented King’s Christian College. This tour was more than a rugby tournament—it was a celebration of sport, culture, and global friendship.
30 April - Southeast Queensland Premier 7’s Round 1 – U14 Girls Shine
Our Girls 7s teams have also had a very busy and successful start to the term. At the first round of the SEQ Super Series, our U14 team delivered an exceptional performance, winning the tournament in dominant fashion. While their attack was sharp and free-flowing, it was their defence that stole the show—not conceding a single try all day. A special thanks to guest coach Ava, a former King’s student and current QLD 7s star, for giving back to the program and helping guide the team.

National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA).
Each year, in every library, school, pre-school, childcare centre, family home and bookshop throughout the country, children from foundational years to Year 6 join in to simultaneously read the same story.
This year marked the 25th Anniversary of this event. Every year a new book is chosen, containing a positive and uplifting story which appeals to modern and diverse audiences that is suitable to read aloud. The story is also able to lend itself to craft and other activities to involve the students.
Our library loves to ensure our students enjoy positive and engaging stories. This year, the book “Truck Cat” was chosen; a book about friendship and of finding home, no matter where you come from. Across the college on the 21st of May, students enjoyed the colourful, vibrant, fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy. Students were also able to be involved in activities from the book during breaktimes in the library. Here are some photos of a few of the classes.
We are excited to welcome our cherished grandparents to King’s on Thursday, 19 June, for Grandparents' Day.
