Creative by Design Celebrates Our Greatest Creator

Creative by Design is a much-loved part of the King’s Pimpama calendar. For four days, the usual rhythm of the campus made room for Chapel, performance, hands-on learning, visiting artists and shared celebration. This year’s theme, Greatest of All Time, kept the focus on God as the ultimate Creator and the source of every creative gift.

Throughout the week, students considered what it means to be creative beings made in God’s image. They were encouraged to recognise that creativity is not reserved for performers or artists; every student can imagine, solve problems, communicate ideas and use their gifts to honour God and share the message of the Gospel.

Monday opened with Chapel, bringing students together in worship and introducing the theme that would shape the week. King’s Has Talent then gave students a stage on which to share their abilities with courage and joy. Just as importantly, their classmates filled the audience with encouragement, celebrating the effort and individuality behind every performance.

On Tuesday, Chapel continued the Greatest of All Time message before creative classroom activities and ‘wow’ lessons invited students to experiment, make and learn in new ways. The day finished with the not-so-silent disco. Although the headphones kept the music contained, the singing certainly was not. Michael Jackson-inspired moves, Waka Waka and the Macarena brought plenty of laughter and energy to the dance floor.

Wednesday connected classroom creativity with professional practice through visits from Mike Chavez and Joel Moore, better known as Mulga the Artist. Mike is a Filipino-Australian artist and classically trained animator whose career has included work on productions for Disney, Warner Bros and DreamWorks. He shared how curiosity, observation and continued practice have shaped his work across animation, illustration and fine art.

Mulga is a Sydney-based street artist, muralist, illustrator, author and designer known for his bold characters and colourful Australian imagery. Students learned how he develops an idea into a distinctive finished artwork and saw that process begin on campus as he started a new King’s Pimpama mural. With the mural still taking shape, students were able to watch an artist move from concept to line and colour in a real school setting.

A final Chapel on Thursday brought the week’s faith and creativity themes together before the much-anticipated Colour Run. Clouds of colour, laughter and big smiles filled the campus as students celebrated the close of Creative by Design and the end of Term 3.

Across the four days, students worshipped together, applauded one another, tried unfamiliar creative experiences and learned from working artists. Creative by Design reminded our community that creative growth takes curiosity, courage and practice, and that every God-given gift can be used with joy and purpose as we Learn Passionately and Love Faithfully.
