The fourth of May marked a milestone day in the life of King’s Christian College, as all three campuses held building opening ceremonies attended by State and Federal Members of Parliament, local Councillors, Church Elders and Executive Pastors, members of the College Board, Principals, ISQ and BGA (Block Grant Authority) representatives, P&F Committee members, and other special guests.
Reedy Creek’s event included a belated opening of the refurbished High School Maths and English block, as well as the opening of The Hub building with five new Year 4 classrooms on level 1, and the ground floor communal space and classrooms, that were all completed in early 2020.
The College was honoured to host Mrs Melissa McMahon MP, who represented the Queensland Government and acknowledged their significant funding contribution toward the High School classroom refurbishments and the new Year 4 classrooms. Throughout Mrs McMahon’s speech, she spoke very fondly of King’s and the impact its three campuses are having on the wider Gold Coast and Logan Village communities.
King’s also had the great privilege of hosting Hon Karen Andrews MP, Minister for Home Affairs and MP for McPherson, at the Reedy Creek building opening. Hon Andrews represented the Australian Government and their financial contributions toward the Ground Floor infill of The Hub which has created a flexible learning and social engagement space for students of all year levels. Hon Andrews spoke of the memorable experience she has enjoyed during every visit to King’s.
College Board Chair, Brendon Blakemore, spoke on behalf of the College in thanking the government and the BGA for their contributions and acknowledged his gratitude for King’s staff who go above and beyond in delivering such an outstanding Christian education. College Captain Isaac Gallagher concluded the official ceremony with a prayer of dedication over the new facilities, before guests took a guided tour of the new and refurbished learning spaces.
It was a treat for our Primary and Noah's Ark students to be able to invite their mums into their classrooms for Mother's Day Celebrations this year. On Friday, 7 May, we were honoured for the opportunity to make space for our special guests to spend time in class with their children perusing schoolwork and enjoying some creative activities together, like making clay sculptures, sugar hand scrubs, jewelled crowns, paper flowers and more. There was even an energetic dance party held in Prep! Every mum received a beautiful hand-written card and it was heartwarming to see our classrooms brimming with fun and laughter as we collectively celebrated our much-loved King's mums.
On behalf of our College, thank you to our incredible community of King’s mums for all you continue to do to love upon your children and sow into their lives every day.
More Primary Mother's Day Photos... More Noah's Ark Mother's Day Photos...For three days this week, NAPLAN has tested students across Australia in a range of key learning areas including language conventions, writing (narrative), reading (comprehension) and numeracy. Our Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 students enjoyed celebrating the completion of their NAPLAN tests on Thursday afternoon. The results from these exams will provide students and their parents with a snapshot of achievement, compared to similar-aged students Australia-wide. For schools, these indicate some of the strengths and weaknesses of each grade so that learning activities can be tailored to meet the particular needs of students.
King's Year 3 students embraced their first NAPLAN experience with courage and confidence, and they enjoyed practising some important life skills like working to a timeframe and checking their work for accuracy. It helped that they received some special treats for their efforts, including chocolate smarties, 'encourage-mints,' class time on the jumping pillow and fun games once NAPLAN was over. Other year levels enjoyed receiving notes of encouragement from their parents that the teachers had organised, watching a class movie once all exams were over, and the sheer relief for Year 9s that they had sat their final NAPLAN.
Our teachers would like to commend every student for their positive attitude toward their tests this year. They showed the College's Foundational Value of Learning Passionately and the attributes of perseverance, aspiration and courage. Well done students!
The results for NAPLAN exams will be made available from late August/early September. Students should keep their NAPLAN results certificate in a safe place as King's is not permitted to keep copies of the certificates. In the case of a certificate being misplaced, parents would need to apply to the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) for a replacement certificate if required.
The inaugural Australian Beach Volleyball Schools’ Cup (ABVSC) involved volleyball teams from schools across Australia and around the world, including three from our College. King’s most accomplished players were very fortunate to have the national competition on their doorstep, with the exciting three-day event held at Coolangatta Beach earlier this month.
Despite unpredictable weather conditions, including heavy wind and rain, every King’s team successfully surpassed their opponents to reach the medal playoff matches in their respective divisions. Congratulations to King’s Senior Girls 4s team who will go down in history as the inaugural champions for this competition, earning their position on the podium as the Gold Medal winners. Well done to Gold medalist, Bailee-Anne Tewake, who also earned the coveted ‘MVP Female’ award for the tournament. King’s Senior Boys 4s played a gruelling Grand Final and successfully earned second place and their Silver Medals. Our Intermediate Boys 4s also enjoyed a successful tournament, winning many matches and finishing strongly in 4th Place.
Well done to all players and special thanks to King’s Elite Volleyball Coach, Ari Klein, for his continued commitment and professionalism in mentoring and training our talented volleyballers.
One word sums up King's extraordinary effort at the recent Primary APS Cross Country Carnival - "TEAM." Despite pouring rain and puddles of mud, our team shone brightly with a sensational start to the carnival. Their lightning-fast results earned them the 9 Years First Place pennant for King's in their category, against the other APS schools.
The 9 Years Girls team had three students finish in the Top 5 out of 64 starters. Abby Coetzee's exceptional race saw her claim 1st Place, with teammates Makyra Melo and Rachel Sadler following closely in 4th and 5th Place. The 9 Years Boys team was also commendable, with Knox Anderson earning 2nd place, Isaac Schwartz 3rd place and Archer Donovan 6th place.
Our 12 Years Girls team results were also superb and won them their team pennant, with Kebe Stanford-Modini running a strong 2nd Place, while her training partner, Charlotte Lawry, came in 4th. Jessica Melo and Mischa Barker also ran an impressive 10th and 11th place to secure the pennant.
King's Primary team was strong across the board and they finished the event 2nd Place Overall to All Saints by a mere 9 points. This was the best Cross Country result in King’s history and demonstrates what can be achieved by our athletes when they prepare early, work hard, and believe it’s possible! Mr Grady, Mr Muir and our King’s sports department are so proud of our Primary Cross Country team - well done!
This year’s King’s high school team was off to a rough start with our Cross Country Captain, Brad Course, unable to compete due to two broken arms, as well as missing four other key runners out with injury. However, our female Cross Country Captain, Sayla Donnelley, started the day with a sizzling win for King's, taking out the Open Girls Cross Country in 1st Place and beating 2nd place by a dominant 20 seconds.
The High School Girls team had athletes on the podium in every agegroup, with Lara Cullen dominating the 16 Years Girls 30-seconds ahead of the 2nd Place-getter, Ruby Hughes running 2nd in the 15 Years Girls, Kyah Anderson and Polly Sowery taking out 1st and 2nd in the 14 Years Girls, and Abby Cullen finishing 2nd in the 13 Years Girls. 2022 promises a very strong King’s Cross Country Girls team, including those athletes who medalled this year for King’s continuing in 2022, and the addition of our 12 Years Girls team who won their APS 12 Years pennant in the Primary Carnival.
Our King’s High School Boys also showcased two winners with Joseph Lethlean dominating the 14 Years Boys, Charlie Miller winning the 15 Years Boys, and Jackson Brown earning 3rd Place with a gutsy run in the 13 Years Boys. Well done to our High School team for finishing in 3rd Place overall and the College looks forward to a very competitive carnival in 2022.
'King’s Skipperoos’ represent a talented group of male and female student skippers who train 3-5 times a week for a number of competitive skipping events. The sport of skipping utilises many skills including speed, power, focus, dedication, resilience and teamwork, and King’s coaches have built a strong club culture of mentorship and peer encouragement.
Seventeen of King’s Skipperoos successfully qualified to compete at the recent Queensland Skipping State Championships at Chandler Arena in Brisbane, which took place from 8-9 May. Competing as individuals, pairs or teams and ranging in age from 7-17, every member of the King’s team achieved a top 3 placing in at least one event during the competition..
The Skipperoos are now in training for the National Championships which will be held at Carrara Sports Complex from 5-7 June. Thank you to our coaches Elly Meteyard, Learne Hawkins, Jenny Meteyard, Jill Smith, Jasmine Hawkins and Ashlee Swinbourne who support and train these amazing young athletes, and good luck to our team at the Nationals.

Jasmine’s incredible athletic ability saw her record 161 consecutive triples, 20 more than the national record that had been held since the 2008 World Championships. Jasmine has now been selected for the Australian team to compete in the 2021 IJRU World Championships.
While Years 7 and 9 students sat their NAPLAN tests this week, King's Years 8 and 10 students simultaneously sat school-based tests to assess their levels of general reasoning, and progress in literacy and numeracy. Considering the time commitment for staff and students to complete High School's Whole School Testing program, it begs the question ‘Why?’
As a school community, our parents, carers, teachers and school administrators are passionate about each one of our students’ learning - that they should grow academically and exceed their own expectations of what’s possible. At King’s, we deliberately resist complacency and believe that education should not just be about going through the motions or letting any student 'fly under the radar.’ However, just wanting something will not necessarily achieve the desired outcome. In this case, we must also gain an accurate understanding of our students’ levels of learning.
This is why students sit these tests, to provide teachers with the data to make informed decisions. They reveal our students’ strengths and weaknesses, help us enhance our general and tailored programs, and show more quickly when a student starts to drift into underachievement. While no one particularly enjoys completing or administering tests, the ‘why’ outweighs the pain of the process, as we lead with wisdom to build an even better learning paradigm.

To do or not to do Essential English… that is the question.
That is a question I get asked regularly and it is understandable that a Year 11 student may be unsure about whether they will go to university or the exact course they want to study. Almost all university courses require a pass in General English, so if a student has any intention of gaining direct entry to university from Year 12, it is important that they pass General English.
Essential English is an excellent subject that equips students with valuable literacy skills for navigating life outside of school - skills that are needed on a daily basis. If a student has no desire to attend university or struggles to pass General English, then this course is worth consideration. Essential English can equip students with the entry requirements for other post-schooling vocations such as work, traineeships or trade. If a student undertakes Essential English but then decides to go to university, this will take them longer and may require an English bridging course after Year 12.
General English is a rigorous course designed to ensure a student is ready for higher education studies. It has been designed to develop a deeper appreciation of both literary texts and non-literary texts and requires strong English competency. It also relies on the effort students have put in during their Middle School years, and build on their confidence in reading, comprehension, grammar and writing skills, understanding and use of genre etc. A student taking this more challenging General English course will only receive their Queensland Certificate of Education points for this course if they pass the full course as points are not given per unit of work. This means that for some students, passing all units of Essential English might be a better option.
