In Week 1 of Term 4, King's Year 6 students ventured to Cairns to enjoy an amazing week in tropical North Queensland. Zelri Marias and Noah Morichovitis (6RS) shared their cohort's unforgettable experience -
Last week, the Year 6 students went to Cairns for our Year 6 camp. Our theme was “Into the Deep.” The Year 6 students had plenty of activities to enjoy. We went to Hartley’s Crocodile Adventure, Cairns Aquarium and were challenged at the Zoom Wildlife & Adventure Dome. At RainForeStation we enjoyed canvas painting (Aboriginal dot art), the majestic butterfly sanctuary, an army duck ride through the rainforest, learning how to throw a boomerang, watching the Pamagirri Aboriginal Dance Show and taking a train ride through Kuranda Natural Railway, where we looked over the amazing Barron Falls.
Our trip highlight was the day out to the reef on the Ocean Marine World Pontoon. We enjoyed free time snorkelling and exploring, venturing on a semi-submersible glass-bottom boat explorer, and an educational lesson with a real Marine Biologist on the reef... not to mention an amazing lunch! Devotions were also a huge highlight. In groups, we shared five things that shaped our lives into becoming the people we are today and talked about things that may be holding us back. It was an incredible feeling to be able to experience all of Year 6 worshipping and pouring out their hearts to God. Our group leaders each gave us a ‘Word for You’ message that they felt God wanted us to hear to better ourselves, which was really special.
We want to thank our amazing teachers for taking us to Cairns! It was a great experience we will never forget.
Many months ago, our Executive Principal, Mr Davis, had the vision to create an amazing Prep – Year 2 playground that would inspire hours of imagination and fun. Talented local artist, Andrew Payne (and Mrs Payne’s husband), was tasked with designing and constructing the project. After brainstorming and conceptualising the aesthetics, a medieval castle theme was chosen and in early 2021 construction works began. Over the six months that followed, Mr Payne persevered through many obstacles, from extreme weather that created extensive flooding and access difficulties for the large machinery, COVID delays to the two large slides and evolving changes from the compliance certifier. Andrew had to think creatively to position the 4-tonne concrete pipes (turrets) onto the very boggy site with heavy equipment, but slowly the framework of the playground came to life. Mrs Payne also poured many hours into the masterpiece as she spent her weekends and school holidays painting the walls, making castle bricks and completing general labouring work. Designed with our young students’ learning and interests in mind, the Castle playground provides problem-solving challenges and opportunities to extend their physical development, from scaling up tunnels, traversing across walls, walking across a rickety bridge onto a slide, climbing through an underground tunnel, swinging on a trebuchet, balancing on logs, to playing in the sandpit ‘moat.'
Official Opening Day
Early in Week 2, our Prep – Year 2 students gathered on the Primary Oval to see their brand new King’s Castle playground unveiled. There were cheers of excitement and appreciation as our Head of Primary, Mrs Payne, cut the red ribbon to signify the official opening of the magnificent new play space. This playground has been dedicated to Mr Davis, whose heart for our King’s kids to have a wonderful playground has seen his dream become a reality, and created a place that will become the highlight of Primary breaktimes for many years to come.

Year 12's Final Festivities
14 October 2021
This week has been a bittersweet one for our Year 12s whose King’s journey is abruptly coming to an end. Throughout Week 2, that surreal ‘finishing’ feeling became more of a reality as they attended their final school assembly and last King’s chapel, enjoyed their final Mission fundraising lunch and planted their commemorative Year 12 tree – a much-loved College tradition. During their chapel service, Mr Brendon Blakemore [King’s Board Chairman] shared some parting words of wisdom and encouraged the cohort to fulfil their God-given purpose. Every student has been uniquely made for ‘such a time as this’ (Esther 4:14) and as a College, we will continue to pray for our Year 12s as they put their best into their final exams in the weeks ahead. We wish our Class of 2021 every success and blessing as they finish their King's journey well, and move into all that God has called them to do.
Audiences Escape into Year 12 Artwork
13 October 2021
This week The Hub at King's was transformed into a contemporary art gallery showcasing our Year 12 Art students' final senior submissions. The exciting exhibition gave families, teachers and King's students the chance to view and interact with the incredible collection of works and vote for their favourite piece. Entitled 'Escape,' the exhibition provided escapism into a new dimension of imaginative art through the application of artistic techniques and media ranging from sculpture, animation, photography, design, painting and digital illustration. The student's art demonstrated the excellent quality of work that King's is renowned for and it was wonderful to be able to share this display with our wider community. Thanks to those who were able to visit the gallery to show your support for our students.

59 Year 12s Receive Nationally Recognised Qualifications
14 October 2021
+3
During our Semester 2 Senior Honours Assembly this week, we recognised our 59 Year 12 students who worked hard to complete VET Certificates while also maintaining their academic studies at King's. We offer students the opportunity to enrol in a range of nationally recognised courses, from Certificate II through to Diploma level. These qualifications equip students with job-ready skills in preparation to enter the workforce post-schooling. On average, a certificate course takes between 4-10 hours per week to complete and many also include practical work experience.
A Certificate course contributes to a senior student’s Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE):
A Diploma contributes 8 credits and can be included in their ATAR calculation
Certificate III & IV contribute 6 - 8 credits and can be included in their ATAR calculation
Certificate II contributes 4 credits
*Note: students require 20 points to achieve a QCE

University for a Semester
Seven of our Year 12 students also completed a unit of a degree along with first-year university students. They experienced the rigour expected in a university course by committing about 10 hours a week on top of their school workload. The successful completion of these units gives students credit towards their degree in 2022.
This year King’s students completed:
Bond - Student for a Semester - Contemporary Issues in Law and Society
Southern Cross University - Headstart Program - The Australian Legal System
Southern Cross University - Headstart Program - Biology
University of Queensland - Enhanced Studies Program - Introduction to Philosophy
Cert III in Christian Ministry
Many Year 12 students will also graduate with a Certificate III in Christian Ministry. Every student from Years 10 - 12 is enrolled into this course and on successful completion receives 8 QCE points.
Many thanks to Mrs Jennie Lubbe and Miss Tanya Gillies for their tireless work in facilitating and supporting our students as they undertake these qualifications.

2021 Mission Trips
14 October 2021
+2
This year, King's coordinated three Mission Trips to Chinchilla, Saint George and Rockhampton during the September school holidays, where our 78 compassionate team members served in remote Queensland communities and modelled the love of Jesus in such a powerful way.
CHINCHILLA MISSION TRIP REPORT
Our group of 26 students and six staff travelled to Chinchilla for an incredible six days. During our trip, we worked with the students and staff at Chinchilla Christian College and our motto was to ‘embrace the uncomfortable’ and our devotions' theme was ‘who you say I am.' The students all stepped up to the challenges of the week and staff from Chinchilla Christian College were blown away with the way they modelled Christ. Our group of students all have a close bond, they are hungry to know more of God and this made our devotions together at night so powerful. Our students ran a chapel service for the High School students from Chincilla, a community-building youth event on Friday night and a praise and worship night on Sunday for the wider community. Following our visit, the Principal of Chinchilla Christian College has decided to employ a full-time chaplain for next year!
As staff members on the trip, we all had so much fun hanging with our team and running community events at night. It was so encouraging to see how each team member stepped up to God’s calling during this mission trip. Every one of us was blessed and encouraged by the Chinchilla students' warmth and hospitality towards us. We thank God for allowing this trip to happen despite COVID restrictions, mask mandates and possible lockdowns. I would encourage every King's High School student to go on a mission trip - it is an awesome and life-changing experience!

Student Highlights
"There were many highs across the whole trip, however, being a part of the worship band was probably the highest point for me. Particularly being a part of the Sunday night service."
-
"I was personally impacted by the mission trip because of the new friends I was able to make. Realising we have many fellow Christians in Chinchilla who are working alongside us for the gospel was pretty awesome for me, and has deepened my faith knowing we have a whole community of Christians wherever we are."
-
"I can definitely say that I embraced the uncomfortable. I stepped up in my faith and became vulnerable in a space that I'm usually quite timid in. I made friends I'd never really had the opportunity to make before on the trip and even the connections I created between Chinchilla students has given me a wider perspective on many aspects of life such as faith, gratitude, and compassion."
-
Thank you to every student and staff member who gave up part of their school break to put God first. We are blessed to have a College that facilitates these trips and encourages students to take part in many mission-based activities like these, so our community can serve others in such a practical and life-changing way.
Final Missions Fundraiser for 2021
15 October 2021

Thursday, 14 October, saw the COLA and Church awash with red and green and all things Christmas, as the High School LIFE team ran their final fundraising event for 2021. With the Christmas season looming large, our community brought their generous festive spirits to help raise funds for King's Community Care Christmas Hampers. Every year, King's Community Care make and distribute hundreds of amazing food hampers to families in need across our local community at Christmas time and we are so pleased to support their valuable work. The LIFE team always put the fun in fundraising, and this event was no different... complete with Christmas festivities, 'best-dressed' awards, live music and tasty treats, but the important mission behind the day was to show Jesus' love to those less fortunate, which is the heart of King's and our incredible LIFE team. Special thanks to our dedicated High School LIFE team [first photo] who have worked hard throughout this year to run our missions fundraisers to raise thousands of dollars for King's charity Mission partners.

Congratulations!

Interschool State Chess Championships 2021
15 October 2021
Open Girls State Division | Friday, 8 October
Our Primary Girls State chess team consisted of Ruhara Mapabandara (Year 6), Siannah Cooke (Year 4), Sophiah Cooke (Year 4) and Sanayaa Mapabandara (Year 2). Both Siannah 5/7 and Sophiah 4.5/7 were awarded merit ribbons while Ruhara and Sanayaa produced a valiant effort for their first State Finals. The Team performed very well in a tough tournament and placed 4th Overall in Queensland. Well done!
The High School Girls team was extremely close, as the medals were decided based upon the final round results. Team Captain, Elena Jule, fought fiercely in her last Girls State finals (a tournament she has been playing in since 2016), our experienced Cern and Ern Wong twins (who have represented King’s at Nationals in both Primary and High School Chess competitions) were also dominant throughout the event, and Nepal Krongkaew (our youngest high school representative) showed King’s strong future potential. The Girls Secondary team placed 3rd Overall, missing out on the QLD title by only one point.
Open State Division | Saturday 9 – Sunday 10 October
It was a nail-biting finish for our four teams who competed in the QLD Interschool State Finals last weekend and concluded another very successful year of King's Chess. Special mentions to Rentaro Inukai who was awarded Best Primary School Board 4 Player in Queensland and Tristan Smith for an outstanding performance on Board 4 in High School, defeating players rated much higher than him.
TEAM RESULTS
Reedy Creek Team 1 | Luka Hart, Rentaro Inukai, Bryan Yang and Micah Young finished 3rd Place on 16.5 game points, narrowly missing First Place by two points. Unfortunately, they were bested 1.5-2.5 in two critical matches against Citipointe and Churchie, and have learned what to work on for next season.
Reedy Creek Team 2 | Kotaro Inukai, Woojoon Ki, Joshua Ong and Cooper Whitaker finished on 14.5 points, tying with Emmanuel College and Somerset College Teams 1.
Pimpama Team | Zoe Haines, Caitlyn Howe, Sennin Naidoo and Arshnoor Sidhu also had a good tournament. Caitlyn scored the highest points 4/6, defeating King’s Reedy Creek Team 2’s Woojoon Ki, with a rated difference of over 400 points. The Pimpama team finished on 10 points, placing 17th in Queensland.
High School Team | Jordan Chan, Edwin Choi, Elena Jule and Tristan Smith finished on 12 points, placing 10th in Queensland.
Thanks to King's Chess Coordinator Mr Cooke’s leadership again this year in continuing to build terrific depth and breadth across the program - qualifying four teams for such a prestigious event is phenomenal. Thank you also to Mr Lapitan and Grandmaster Moulthun Ly for their passionate teaching over the year and especially in preparation for the tournament. Special thanks to our King's Chess parents who provide immense support in every way imaginable.
