Our first Easter Fest event was a spectacular success thanks to the collective vision, effort and support of King's staff, students and families. HOPE was our 2022 theme woven through Easter Fest, as we reflected on the eternal hope we have in Jesus. It was amazing to be able to come together as a school community, under clear skies, and have The King's Table Forecourt filled with our families, the melodies of live music, the scent of tasty treats and the beautiful backdrop of artwork. Inside the auditorium, our audience enjoyed a stunning showcase of performing art thanks to our student musicians, choralists and dancers, whose dedication and talents culminated in an entertaining program of polished performances. The Prep Centre also provided a lively hub of craft activity and Easter-themed exhibits from our youngest artists. Thank you to all of our King's families who attended Easter Fest and helped us enjoy a wonderful community event together.
EASTER FEST FILM COMPETITION
We held our first student film festival as part of Easter Fest and our judges were very impressed by the quality and standard of entries this year. Thanks to all of our student 'film producers' for showing such creativity and effort, and congratulations to our finalists and winners, whose films were aired at the event.
CONGRATULATIONS 2022 WINNERS SEE ALL FILM FESTIVAL ENTRIESAs a Christian community, Easter is the most important time of the year for us – a time to reflect on that fateful moment in history when Jesus bore the sin of every person on the cross, so that we may have the gift of eternal life. Each year, our College holds an Easter Service where our Chaplaincy team prepare an incredible live service for all students. This year’s message was on friendship, as King’s Chaplains, Mr Muir and Mr Malcolm shared about their 45-year friendship and the value of having a friend that ‘sticks closer than a brother’ (Proverbs 18:24). Even greater than this, they said, is the perfect friendship that Jesus offers to every person. Knowing us closely and loving us unconditionally, Jesus promises us a life filled with His love, unending companionship and eternal hope. We pray that our school community will enjoy this Easter as you reflect on Jesus and how much He loves you.
Today we bid an emotional farewell to a King’s icon – a remarkable man of God who has shaped the spiritual heart of our College during his 25 years of service as a Lead Chaplain. Ps Guy Ormerod retired from King's on Friday, 1 April, and leaves an eternal legacy. Over a quarter of a century, Ps Guy championed our Mission Trip program and Hillsong Conference trips, transformed our school camp devotions and helped our school flourish from its small beginnings. During our farewell service, Campus Principal, Mr Meyers, reflected on Ps Guy and the way he carries the heart of God in all he does. "His gift of evangelism has seen him continuously outwork The Great Commission and lead many young people into a relationship with Jesus. He embodies Jesus' greatest commandment – 'to love the Lord your God with all your heart… and to love others as yourself' (Matthew 22:37)." With his sacrificial service and genuine love for King’s staff and students, Ps Guy will always be embedded in the foundational fabric of King's. The extended celebrations for our much-loved Chaplain culminated on Friday with a number of tearful ‘send-offs.’ These included a staff breakfast and farewell service, morning tea and an honorary tunnel, where our primary and high school students and staff lined the bridge and showered Ps Guy in hugs, high-fives, posters, cheers, a Haka, and a memorable farewell fitting for a staff member and friend we will never forget.
As part of this year's Easter Fest celebrations, primary students were invited to submit their works of art into our inaugural Easter Fest Art Competition. It was wonderful to receive so many creative submissions and to see a variety of interpretations for our 2022 theme 'Hope'. We were very blessed to have renowned prophetic painter and illustrator, Lynne Hudson, as one of our judges this year. Lynne took the time to carefully study each piece, before providing words of encouragement to each of the winners. Our second very talented artist and judge, Esther Wienaber, also spent a morning in the art room reviewing the submissions and helping to make the difficult decision of choosing our 2022 Easter Fest Primary Art winners. Congratulations to all of our incredible young artists!
VIEW WINNER'S BOOKLET (PDF)Our High School Honours Assemblies occur twice a year to award Honours Badges to students as we celebrate their extraordinary achievements from the previous semester. On Wednesday this week, we recognised our Year 9 and 10 students' success in the areas of College Enhancement (Performing Arts & community service), Sport and Academics from Semester Two, 2022. Honours Badges were awarded at Teal, Bronze, Silver and Gold level, as determined by the College's Honours Criteria. It was wonderful to see so many achievements across such a breadth of endeavours and to see so many students working hard to achieve their best in their God-given gifts. Congratulations to our recipients on these outstanding achievements!
Thank you parents and family members for attending this event and showing your support.
Years 9-10 Honours RecipientsOn Thursday, 24 March, our Year 9 Japanese students went to Donto Sapporo in Bundall to enjoy the flavours of Japanese cuisine as a class excursion. They made us proud when they combined their classroom learning with a real-life experience by ordering drinks and using excellent table manners. On return, some students wrote about their authentic Japanese learning experience:
Our Year 6 students have been working on a Business Plan this term as part of their PBL Sustainability topic. Students began by exploring the purpose of businesses and the different ways they provide goods and services. Then they investigated an economics or business issue, challenge or event, and were tasked with creating a product or service that would promote sustainability. They wrote a business case with a proposal to commercialise their product and then worked on a 'pitch' for a team of 'venture capitalists.' The students created some fantastic business proposals and the top one from each class presented theirs at the Shark Tank culmination event on Thursday, 31 March. The Year 6 students watched on in anticipation as their peers presented their ideas to the three ‘sharks’ who followed with some challenging questions. Every student presented their ideas clearly and responded to the judges with confidence. Congratulations to our winning entrepreneurs Abi, Maddison, Morgan, and Charlize with their subscription-based website Fun Fitness, targeted at female athletes and promoting exercise, healthy eating and hair products and styles for sport.
Many thanks to our amazing 'sharks' - Mr Tom Wilson, Ms Lucy Batt and Mr Joshua Easton - for giving their time and bringing their business expertise to help select our 2022 winners.
The Queensland School Swimming Championships were held in Brisbane last week and our 19 swimmers from King’s represented their school and region with excellence as they swam in all of their selected events. Congratulations to all swimmers for attending at the highest level and swimming their hearts out. It was fantastic to receive so many incredible results, with many personal bests and records broken. Congratulations to our students who medalled and qualified through to Nationals in August:

Last week, King's chess teams attended their first interschool chess tournament of 2022 and enjoyed a very successful start to the year's competition. Primary teams participated last Tuesday, while the High School teams' event was held on Wednesday. King’s Chess Team 2 had an outstanding performance that earned them second place, only half a point behind Somerset. King's Teams 1, 3 and 4 took out third, fourth and fifth respectively - a particularly outstanding outcome by Team 1, who were down a player from the fourth round. Congratulations to Darren Lin and Luka Hart for placing third and second respectively, in the individual section. Darren earned five points for his team, while Luka, our King's Chess Captain, secured 5.5 points to bump our Team 1 into Third place.
In Primary Divisions B and C, King’s Team 6 came out strong with 18 full points and successfully winning First Place! Jackson Burgermeister earned 7 points, and Kian Illiuk and Jayden Taylor earned 6 each, cementing the three-man team to finish First in B division. King's Team 12 also achieved an astonishing 18 points to secure the win in Division C. In the High School competition, Edwin Choi took out First Place - individual tied on countback with 5.5 points - just ahead of Cooper Whitaker also on 5.5. Micah Young and Tristan Smith also showed their skills, helping bring the team to an outstanding 19.5 points - 1.5 points ahead of second place. Well done to all of our High School teams for showing their Chess prowess and taking out the top tournament title. Well done to all our teams for representing King's so well.
Our annual King's P&F Ball is only four weeks away and promises to be an incredible night of delicious food, amazing music and great company! Join us at Seaworld Resort Conference Centre on Saturday, 30 April, from 6.30pm for this exciting event. There will be some great items to bid on with the money raised going toward King's missions and the P&F Committee for exciting projects our students will benefit from. Tickets include buffet dinner and 4-hour beverage package, and can be bought via the button below.
VIEW THE P&F BALL FLYERSome of you may remember Dr Justin Coulson from our student and parent seminars last year, or more recently from his starring role in the popular TV series ‘Parental Guidance.’ As a parenting expert, with a PhD in Psychology, several published books to his name, and his successful Happy Families website, Dr Coulson has been working hard to help parents in many practical ways. We are blessed to welcome Dr Coulson back to King’s this year where he will come and share some great advice with our High School students in Term 2.
We also have some other exciting sessions coming up for our King’s parents that we want to let you know about:
On Wednesday, 20 April 2022, from 7pm – 8.30pm, Dr Coulson will be hosting a free live session for our King’s community. We encourage parents to come and hear from this engaging communicator on the topic of setting healthy expectations for your child’s school success. Our senior King’s staff will also be at this event and available afterwards to chat with parents.
About the Session
"When our children are young, we are thrilled at their developmental achievements. We're convinced they'll grow up to change the world. Our expectations are high. As they grow, our expectations help some of them lift while others struggle. Why is that? Is it them? Us? A combination of both? And sometimes, even when we don't apply pressure or expectations, our children stagger under the weight of their own desires for perfection. How do we support them through their self-imposed perfectionism? This presentation is for every parent who wants the best for their child at school. We'll explore effective strategies to reduce perfectionistic tendencies in our children - and in ourselves - and consider ways to encourage our children to take risks, make mistakes, and become more resilient and adaptive in the face of academic, social, physical, and psychological challenges."
Bringing Up Boys Summit - Wednesday, 6 April
The Bringing up Boys Summit, presented by Happy Families, is about one thing: taking you into your son’s world and helping you connect with him in the way he needs you to. Ultimately, you won’t just find solutions to help your son through friendship breakdowns, the lure of drugs, anxiety and other mental health issues, or even the life-changing process of puberty. You’ll find ways to rekindle the connection you both want… and both need. Dr Coulson and the 12 raising boys experts presenting at this Summit will bring their research, study and expertise to guide parents through the world of raising boys, and helping you rekindle this important connection. Cost $199 includes ongoing access to the Summit presentations.

King's library staff encourage all students to engage with our libraries and resources and to share the clever creations they make, inspired by the books they borrow. Over the past term, we had a number of students show their creativity and procedure-following skills to produce a number of marvellous creations. Our librarians in the Senior Library asked for photos of their books and end products and they were very impressed by the recent submissions.
Library Lovers' Week is a wonderful opportunity for us to celebrate how much we enjoy our Junior Library and how much we love and value our books. In our library lessons, the Prep - Year 3 students talked about why they love the library and what it means to them. Some students added messages of love for our Library on heart shapes, which are on display. As part of Library Lovers Week, the students took part in a colouring-in competition. There were many impressive entries and our eight winners each received a book prize.
Congratulations to everyone!
The National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is designed to provide regular data on student achievement in the areas of literacy and numeracy: essential skills that each child needs to succeed. NAPLAN is a point-in-time assessment that allows you to see how your child is progressing in literacy and numeracy against the national standard, and compared with their peers throughout Australia. King’s teachers frequently use NAPLAN to provide additional information about student progress and information decisions about differentiation and targeted teaching in the classroom to improve future student outcomes.
NAPLAN testing will take place in March this year. Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 participate in tests for Reading, Writing, Conventions of Language (spelling, grammar and punctuation), and Numeracy.
At King’s, we expect and encourage all students to participate in NAPLAN testing, and we are pleased with our established tradition of high levels of participation. During the testing window in March, catch-up tests will be offered for students who are absent on test days. Support can be arranged for students with disabilities, particularly if the student regularly accesses similar support for school assessment tasks. Students may also be withdrawn from NAPLAN by their parent or carer. This is a matter of consideration by parents and carers in consultation with the school, and would require a signed withdrawal form.
If you wish to discuss your Year 7 or 9 child’s participation in NAPLAN, please contact Mrs Stephanie Kozina on skozina@kingscollege.qld.edu.au.
