Our College values the strong partnerships we have with many local churches as we encourage students to develop their leadership skills and God-given gifts, through various ministry and serving opportunities. Every year in the first term, the College holds a special Induction Service to present our newest senior leaders with their leadership badges. Our 2023 service was held on Tuesday, 7 March, and it was an honour to welcome many Church Pastors as our special guest presenters and to have them join us as we prayed for our leaders. Every Year 12 student was also presented with a leadership badge to recognise the responsibility they carry as leaders in our school community.
Congratulations to our 2023 Senior Captains and House Captains and our Year 12 students for stepping into these significant roles at King's - we are excited to see all that God has for you as you faithfully serve our community this year. Our College Captains, Seo-Woo Choi and Caleb Choga, both gave incredible speeches, as they spoke about using the leadership potential God has placed in every person. King's Reedy Creek Campus Principal, Mr Russell Meyers, also gave an aspirational message to the cohort. The service concluded with an afternoon tea for students, staff, parents and invited guests in the King's Table forecourt.
On Tuesday, we gathered to celebrate and acknowledge the achievements of our 2022 Year 12 students who worked so hard and demonstrated incredible dedication and resilience throughout their final year of schooling. Our Year 11 and 12 assembly took time to specifically honour the 18 graduates who received an ATAR over 95.00. These results are a significant milestone in their academic journey and a testament to their commitment to their studies and determination to achieve academic success. While this is an amazing personal achievement, it is also an important milestone in our College’s history.
As the ATAR is a percentile rank, achieving a 95.00 or above places students in the top 5% of the State. Included in the 18 students who achieved above 95.00 are five students who achieved in the top 1% of the State, with an ATAR of over 99.00. These students have demonstrated perseverance and excellence by being consistently committed to achieving their very best in all of their assessments. This is what can be achieved with a strong work ethic, a passion for learning, and determination. We are so proud of each of them!
We are so honoured that many of these students have joined the After School Homework and Assignment Assistance tutoring team! We wish them all the best in their future endeavours and pray God’s blessing over their lives.
Students from all year levels continue to thrive academically and in their various giftings at King’s. We were thrilled to award 191 students from Years 8 - 10 an Academic Honours Award during our special Honours assemblies over the last two weeks. These were awarded to students who excelled in their Semester 2, 2022 reports. Congratulations to all our students who strive to achieve their very best. Whether or not you have received an honour this time, we are proud of your hard work in achieving your goals.
On Thursday this week, we recognised our Year 8 students' success in the areas of Academics, College Enhancement (Performing Arts & community service) and Sport from Semester Two, 2022. It was great to see so many students from the cohort cross the stage to collect Honours Badges for achieving success in their various endeavours.
Congratulations Year 8 Honours AwardeesThe heart of our College community is about caring for those in need as we foster a culture of compassion and generosity. Every term at King’s, we hold a fundraising day in Primary and High School and enjoy raising money for a specific charity. We launched our 2023 LIFE Program on Friday, 17 February, with a free dress SUPERHERO DAY, coordinated by our Primary School LIFE Team.
Our LIFE Program offers Years 3 – 12 students the perfect opportunity to practise their leadership and service skills, make new friends and volunteer their time to help others. Find out more about King's LIFE Program on Compass via this link.
Primary Fundraiser – Superhero Day
Our Primary community were 'super' excited to fundraise for Bali Christian College (BCC) with an out-of-this-world Superhero Dress Up Day and BBQ lunch. The Primary School LIFE Team did an incredible job of organising and running the lunchtime fundraiser and our students brought along their gold coin donations for BCC, who will use the funds to help families with school fees and purchase much-needed learning devices. Well done to our Primary School community for helping to change the world!
The annual Primary and Secondary APS Swimming Carnival was held at Somerset College on Tuesday 14 and Wednesday 15 February 2023. We had two very hot days of competition which did not stop the competitive spirit of our King's athletes, who came up against some of the best student swimmers in the region to finish the meet with some outstanding individual and team results. King's Secondary team finished 5th and our Primary team finished 4th. Please see the highlights below.

On Wednesday, 8 February, our Year 11 Food & Nutrition students attended a field trip to Tommerup’s Dairy Farm. Tommerup’s Dairy Farm is located in the Kerry Valley, south of Beaudesert, and is a sixth-generation family property. Students enjoyed the interactive experience where they had the opportunity to increase their understanding of The Dairy Food System including dairy production, by-products, waste management and sustainability.
Our Year 12 Geography class went on an excursion to Palm Beach as part of the Year 12 curriculum. The goal was to gather data for a field report on responding to land cover transformations (IA2). During the trip, we used a variety of methods, such as transects, quadrants, wind observations, and beach slope measurements to collect information about the coastal environment.
We collected data from both an undisturbed and an altered site, which allowed us to see the differences and understand the impact that human activity can have on the coastal environment. We also took into account factors such as land use, erosion, natural processes, indigenous perspectives, and coastal management strategies. The excursion was a valuable learning experience for us as we were able to apply our knowledge to real-life situations and gain a deeper understanding of the complexities involved in coastal management.

Many of our subjects at King's include exciting incursions and excursions throughout the year, giving students a range of interactive experiences to enrich their learning. On Thursday, our Year 2 classes enjoyed an exciting incursion presented by Indi from Wild Rangers where they discovered more about Minibeasts. The students were delighted to encounter a variety of Minibeasts including snails, stick insects, a giant burrowing cockroach, scorpion, tarantula, centipede and a special vertebrate guest who likes to eat bugs. The students were able to look through a magnifying glass to meet 'Fluffy' an Australian Tarantula, who is part of the Arachnid family. They learned many interesting facts about invertebrate groups; the habitats each bug lives in, the food they eat, how they change, defend themselves and how to interact safely with them.
This incursion extended upon their current unit of learning, which focuses on how living things grow and change and where we can see the fingerprints of God in creation. The children were excited to touch some of the bugs, supporting empathy and a greater understanding of the need to protect these mini beasts and their habitats as an important part of our Ecosystem.
Digital Art is an elective subject that teaches students practical design and photography skills. On Thursday, 16 February, the Year 12 Digital Art class went to Coolangatta to work on some surf photography and landscape photos. Students were asked to develop and demonstrate their ability to capture photos of surfers in action, as part of the excursion. The students had an enjoyable morning and produced some great photos. Michael Hay's photos (#1 & 2) and Yeji Lim's photo (#3) are of unknown surfers enjoying the clean conditions at Snapper Rocks. They used a telephoto lens and focus-tracking techniques to capture these impressive shots.
Our Year 6 students have been busy in their art classes making some beautiful organic felt bowls. They created their own felt out of coloured fleece and then chose the colours to make and shape their bowls. Each bowl is completely unique and could never be recreated, just as God has created us. Well done students on your wonderfully unique sculptures.
Library Lovers' Day is celebrated on 14 February to honour libraries, librarians, book lovers, and lovers of libraries. This year King’s Libraries celebrations continued for the whole week. Students and staff were able to enter several different competitions. All students who borrowed books during the week automatically entered a competition and had a turn to spin the prize wheel for an extra prize. High school students were also able to participate in the 'Blind Date with a Book'. During the week, students borrowed a total of over 1,150 books from the Main Library and 325 from the Junior Library. Next week we will share the full results and all the prize winners. Our libraries love to encourage our students to read, and we are constantly finding fun ways to engage our students in reading.
We are all set for an incredible Easter Fest event as we prepare to celebrate Easter with our College families and friends. This free, fun-filled community event offers activities for all ages and we look forward to welcoming you to King's for our 2024 Easter Fest celebration on Tuesday, 26 March, from 5pm - 7.30pm.
King's is excited to invite all budding student filmmakers in Years 6-12 to enter our Easter Fest Short Film & Animation competition. With great prizes up for grabs and the chance to have your entry aired to a large audience at our Easter Fest event on March 28, this is a great opportunity to get behind the camera and put your videography skills into practice. Students may work individually or in groups and all completed entries must be in by Friday, 17 March. Find out more about how to enter, or view a finalist from last year, via the links below:
Easter Fest Film Entry Information View A Film Finalist from 2022WHAT IS NAPLAN?
The National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) will take place in March this year and is designed to provide regular data on student achievement in the areas of literacy and numeracy - essential skills that each child needs to succeed. Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 participate in NAPLAN tests for reading, writing, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation), and numeracy.
NAPLAN is a point-in-time assessment that allows you to see how your child is progressing in literacy and numeracy against the national standard and compared with their peers throughout Australia. King’s teachers frequently use NAPLAN to provide additional information about student progress and inform decisions about differentiation and targeted teaching in the classroom to improve future student outcomes.
PARTICIPATION & ADJUSTMENTS
At King’s, we expect and encourage all students to participate in NAPLAN testing and we are pleased with our established tradition of high levels of participation. During the testing window in March, catch-up tests will be offered for students who are absent on test days.
Support can be arranged for students with disabilities, particularly if the student regularly accesses similar support for school assessment tasks. Students may also be withdrawn from NAPLAN by their parent or carer. This is a matter of consideration by parents and carers in consultation with the school, and would require a signed withdrawal form.
