On Monday, 6 June, our Primary students, staff and guests filled King's auditorium for our biannual Primary Honours Assembly. This special occasion presented students with their Honours awards for an array of achievements in extra-curricular endeavours, including chess, choir, debating, skipping and swimming. There were also two important new awards presented at this event to acknowledge students who exemplify our College Culture. The first was our 'King's Kid' award which was given to one student from every Primary class who has shown their dedication to applying our King's Foundational Values throughout their school life and embodying the heart of our College culture. Similarly, the 'Worship Warrior' award was presented to those primary students who have shown their heart for Jesus throughout our chapels and their daily lives. It was heartwarming to have so many awardee parents able to attend the event and to have our Year 6 Captains confidently help to lead the morning's service. We congratulate all of our Honours Award recipients on your special achievements!
On Tuesday, 7 June, our Year 5 students spent the first part of their school day on the move, all in the name of a good cause. You Belong is a Gold Coast-based charity that helps empower and equip refugees with a range of life skills and resources. Tim and Sarah Buxton are King's parents, who founded the charity after spending four years in Iraq during the height of the ISIS crisis where they helped thousands of Iraq and Syrian refugees. Their amazing programs, events and workshops help many refugees to integrate and thrive in Australia.
"The global refugee crisis is the greatest humanitarian disaster since World War 2, with more than three times the population of Australia currently displaced around the world."
- Tim Buxton, You Belong Founder
Every June, You Belong seeks support for its work through its biggest annual fundraising campaign Move2Belong, which coincides with World Refugee Day on June 20. Move2Belong encourages people to choose a migration route that a refugee would travel, and cover that distance during June. Whether it's surfing, walking, skating, running, cycling, swimming, or another activity, anyone can set themselves a move challenge and help the important work of You Belong. Ultra-marathon runner, Jordan Chenery, set himself the remarkable Move2Belong challenge to run 33 marathons in 33 days! Jordan had visited Syria and was touched by the kindness of its people and now wants to draw attention to the plight of those fleeing the country, and other war-torn regions around the world. He hopes his mammoth marathon efforts will raise awareness and financial support for You Belong's important work with refugees.
"When you see what a refugee does to move to a new location, you really start to appreciate how far people go to create a new life for themselves. I've committed to doing a marathon every day in June – but I’m not running to save my life or move to a different place – I’m just running to create awareness to what goes on around the world."
- Jordan Chenery
Our Year 5 students ran with Jordan as he completed his seventh marathon at King's on Tuesday, and enjoyed the opportunity to ask him a number of questions about his Move2Belong motivations. The inspirational story was covered by Channels 7 and 9 and we thank those involved for helping to raise awareness for You Belong and it's wonderful work in helping refugees.
Year 3 Multicultural Day 2022
12 July 2022
An array of colourful cultural costumes covered King's primary precinct on Friday, 10 June, as our Year 3 students dressed up to represent countries from around the world. The culminating event was part of their Integrated Studies unit Celebrating Culture and Community and the highly-anticipated Multicultural Day was a final celebration of their Term 2 studies. All students had chosen a neighbouring country that they would be an ambassador for and worked hard throughout the term to showcase their country's culture. On Multicultural Day students welcomed parents to their classes to showcase their projects, immersed in a range of multicultural activities and enjoyed a selection of international tasty treats. This valuable unit taught our Year 3s so much and helped them reflect on what it means to show God’s love by respecting and celebrating the vast number of cultures we have throughout our incredible global community.
King's Class Coordinator's Catch Up
8 June 2022
+2
King's Primary Class Coordinator Program has been running for a number of years with the purpose of strengthening family connections across our College community. Each class in Primary School has a Class Coordinator who volunteers their time to support the teacher, help families connect and share school information. We are fortunate to have these amazing ambassadors in our community and we know that our new King's families are especially grateful to have another parent they can call upon, to ask about some of the idiosyncrasies of school life.
We held our Class Coordinator Midyear catch up last week at the King's Table, where our 2022 Class Coordinators enjoyed the chance to chat with Mr Meyers, Mrs Payne, and our Year Level Coordinators, and to hear more from our Event Coordinator about the upcoming King's Carnival Day. Our Primary Art Teacher, Mrs Wendyk, also led a relaxing coffee and paint session. It was a special occasion as we celebrated these amazing members of our community and all that they do to help build the caring culture we strive for at King's.

King's Skipping Success at State Championships
7 June 2022
King's Skipperoos competed at the State Skipping Championships on the weekend of 4 - 5 June at the Logan Metro Indoor Sports Centre. King's energetic team of skippers from Years 2 - 8 competed at this event, as well as King's alumnus and current coach, Jasmine Hawkins. It was heartwarming to see our high school students supporting and encouraging our junior athletes throughout this event, where King's achieved some incredible results.
Congratulations to our newest Queensland State Champions:
Nate Mpala and Mackenzie Hoy: 2 x 30-second double-under relay event
Addison Roughley: 1 minute triple-under event
Jasmine Hawkins (ex-student and current coach): consecutive triple-under event
King's Skipperoos would like to thank their wonderful coaches, Miss Elly Meteyard and Miss Jasmine Hawkins, and also the College for providing the bus to and from the event. The team is now in training for the 2022 National Championships which will be held in Darwin during the September holidays. Good luck Skipperoos!
King's Cheer's Change in Leadership After 12 Years
10 June 2022
Over twelve years ago, Angela Hicks had the vision to develop a school-based Cheer program at King's that would share the same supportive Christian culture of the school. King's Cheer was born in 2010 and promised to promote the athletic and spectacular sport of cheerleading in a safe and positive environment. From its small beginnings, King's Cheer has grown into a thriving program that now runs over 15 classes every week across Reedy Creek and Pimpama campuses, involving hundreds of students of all ages. Cheerleading is a performance-based team sport that combines elements of gymnastics, dance and acrobatics. It relies on every member of the team working together to be successful and it is thanks to the program's strong culture that has seen King's Cheer teams achieve incredible success in local, regional and national competitions over the past 12 years.
Mrs Hicks has also grown a team of like-minded coaches, who share her vision and passion for the sport. One such coach is 'Miss Hannah', who has worked as a Head Coach at King's Cheer for over 10 years. Hannah Blaxland was a National gymnast from a young age, a successful Cheerleader herself, and is also a qualified Occupational Therapist. Mrs Hicks made the difficult decision to step out of running the King's Cheer program this term, to return to her love of teaching in the classroom, and we are very blessed to have her join King's Primary teaching team. This week, Mrs Hicks announced that Mrs Hannah Blaxland will take over as Program Director, and while the Cheer community are very disappointed to lose their amazing founder, they are equally confident that 'Miss Hannah' will successfully take the program into its next season.
"King's Cheer will continue as normal as the amazing Miss Hannah takes over as Program Director. I wish Hannah all the best and pray that she will have as much joy running King's Cheer as I did! I would like to thank all the parents and teachers for your continued support, encouragement and positive feedback. King's Cheer will continue to be amazing and fulfilling for our students and I look forward to seeing the teams' future successes. Go Team!!"
- Mrs Hicks, King's Cheer Founder
Our College wants to acknowledge and thank Angela and her family for their immense dedication to King's Cheer over the past twelve years. She has invested so much time and energy into our Cheerleaders and has helped so many young students flourish and grow in self-confidence through her amazing coaching and cheer program. We look forward to welcoming Mrs Hicks as a permanent teacher in our Primary school from Term 3.

Year 10 are Set for Success
7 June 2022
Throughout this term, Year 10 students have worked through the initial careers program in Set for Success lessons, designed to help them identify possible career interest areas. Students submitted their College Senior Education and Training Career Plan and King's now invite Year 10 parents to attend a meeting with their child and a senior teacher, to discuss their career planning process. This process is designed to support students’ pathway to QCE, as well as guiding them about how best to structure their learning in Years 11 and 12 around their abilities, interests and ambitions. Helping students to identify and plan effective career pathways is an integral part of our students’ transition from senior schooling to tertiary education and/or employment. Beyond the Set Plan process and interview, we would like to remind parents that at King’s we offer our students guidance with:
Career counselling
VET pathway advice and support
Subject selection for senior study

We also collected an incredible 2,442 tinned meals for the charity, which they will be able to use to feed those in need. The results of the Can Drive Competition are in and it was Finney House and their F9 PCclass who collected the most cans and earned themselves a 'party' in the Hub at the beginning of Term 3. What an incredible effort from our biggest donators from the following PC classes:
Finney (F9) 372 points
Newton (N9) 340 points

Join the 2022 Premier's Reading Challenge
13 May 2022
At King's, we love encouraging our students to read, and so each year our College participates in the Premier's Reading Challenge (PRC). The Challenge is not designed to be a competition, but a way for students to develop a love of reading for life as they explore a wide range of literary texts and develop their appreciation of the English language. Last year, 926 schools and 357 centres across Queensland took part in this Challenge, involving more than 168,000 children who read over 2.39 million books! The 2022 program is once again open to all Prep - Year 9 students and is running from Monday, 9 May - to Friday, 26 August. Students are encouraged to select a range of fiction and non-fiction books suited to their reading ability and fill out the PRC form with the details of books they have read.
To complete the Premier's Reading Challenge, students need to read (or experience) the relevant number of books within the Challenge timeframe:
Prep - Year 2: Read or experience 20 books (experiencing a book includes classroom or at home activities such as shared reading, listening and reading along with a book, or being read to)
Years 3 - 4: Read 20 books
Years 5 - 9: Read 15 books (the reduced amount reflects that older students often select longer, more complex books that take longer to read)
Download a PRC form below or collect one from the King's Library. Happy reading!
There are a number of traineeships available and these vacancies are listed on King's Careers site. These change on a weekly basis as new positions become available. Students who cannot find anything that appeals to them will need to source their own employer.
