Week 2 of Term 4 was filled with mixed emotions for our Year 12 students, whose King’s journey is abruptly coming to an end. Throughout the week, that surreal feeling of finishing high school became more of a reality as the cohort attended their final assembly and chapel service, dressed in pink for 'Pink Day,' enjoyed their last missions fundraising lunch at King's and planted their commemorative Year 12 tree.
Every year, our graduating cohort is named based on the characteristics of that year group and during the Year 12 assembly, Campus Principal, Mr Meyers, addressed the 'Year of Solidarity.' He reiterated that as a group, our Class of 2022 embody their title as they have always remained united through adversity. "COVID didn't divide you but brought you all closer." He said. "You have always used your God-given gifts not to elevate yourselves individually but to become stronger and more successful together." "As a cohort, you recognise the uniqueness in every person and accept and respect each other. You have always shown inclusiveness to new students and to your younger peers. We are proud of the way you have led the College with distinction and we encourage you to leave a lasting legacy by finishing well," Mr Meyers said. He read Romans 12:4-5 and Ecclesiastes 4:12 as the scriptures that the College felt described our graduating students.
During their final assembly, Mr Rees Davis [King’s Executive Principal] shared some parting words of wisdom with a valuable message about working as a team. He gave a personal example of tuna fishing and the three roles involved in successfully catching these challenging fish. 'In life, we find ourselves in many different teams and it is important that we each play our role in the team to achieve success while we learn and grow as individuals.' We wish our Class of 2022 every success and blessing as they prepare for and sit their final Year 12 exams and finish their King's journey, to move on into all God has called them to do.
This week, The Hub at King's was transformed into a contemporary art gallery showcasing our Year 12 Visual Art students' final submissions. The students entitled their exhibition dis-ə-ˈsem-bəl as it showcased an exciting new dimension of art in a variety of media from sculpture, animation, photography, design, painting and digital illustration. The exhibition was open to staff and students before school and during lunch breaks and on the final night of the exhibition, King's families were also invited to attend. The guests enjoyed perusing the art and hearing from King's Alumni Lola Irwanto and Alex Meth, as they shared about their creative journeys since leaving school and their current work in the design industry. They gave enlightening talks about their experiences and inspired our graduating students to chase their creative dreams. Art is something that finds its true value in being viewed by others, so it was wonderful to be able to share this display with our wider community. Thanks to those who were able to visit the 'gallery' and support our talented young students.
The annual Gold Coast Schools Legal Essay Awards took place on Monday, 10 October. It was held in conjunction with Griffith University Law School and sponsored by SPG Lawyers. Legal Studies students from schools across the Gold Coast and Brisbane were invited to submit legal essays dealing with topical national and international legal issues. There were many entries of an exceptional standard again this year and the judges had the difficult decision of selecting the winners. Prizes and trophies were presented at the event by Tony O’Connor, Partner at SPG Lawyers, Professor Therese Wilson, Dean of Law at Griffith University, and Dr Kate van Doore, Deputy Head of School (Learning and Teaching), Griffith University.
Adrian Townsend from our Year 12 Legal Studies class was awarded First Place in the competition for his essay 'Introducing electronic voting in federal elections to avoid electoral fraud.' Adrian received $500 for himself and $300 for King's, as well as the winner's trophy, which is now on display in the High School office. Joshua Gomes-Luis, also a King's Legal Studies student, was awarded one of two runner-up prizes and $300 for his topic on 'the mistreatment, exploitation and indefinite detention of individuals with cognitive disabilities in prison.' Congratulations Adrian and Joshua - we are so proud of you both!
The Year 12's Final Assembly this week included the final presentation of Year 12 Honours Awards, as well as the official handover of College Captaincy duties from our 2022 leaders to our incumbent 2023 Captains and Prefects. It is always a special moment as our departing and new leaders meet on the stage to shake hands and make the leadership changeover. Congratulations to our 2023 captaincy team on your appointment to these important positions within our College and we thank you for your past and future contributions to King's. We will continue pray for God's wisdom, guidance and abundant blessing over each of you as you serve our school and LOVE faithfully, LEAD diligently, LEARN passionately and LIVE Purposefully as King's leaders.

The Amphitheatre precinct was awash with all things merry and bright on Thursday, 13 October, as the High School LIFE team ran their final missions fundraising event for 2022. With our Year 12s about to depart for final exams and the Christmas season looming, our High School community brought their festive spirits to help raise funds for King's Community Care. Every year, the charity distributes hundreds of amazing food hampers to families in need for Christmas and the College is privileged to contribute to this valuable project. King's LIFE team always put the fun in fundraising, and this event was no different... complete with a Christmas treats competition, 'best-dressed' awards, live student performances, larger-than-life Christmas decorations and a lunchtime sausage sizzle. The important message at the heart of this event (and our entire LIFE program) was to show love to those in need, as we put our Foundational Values of compassion and humility into practice. Special thanks to our dedicated High School LIFE team who worked hard throughout the year, using their time and talents to help run our missions program and raise record amounts for King's charity Mission partners.
Prior to the event, our expert panel of judges perused over the amazing array of entries for the Christmas Treat competition. With so many colourful Christmas-themed creations from our High School students, it was difficult to pick the winners and in the end, it all came down to taste. The treats were then sold to staff and students during the lunchtime event on Thursday to help with our fundraising efforts. Thank you to our high school families for your generous contributions of delicious baked goods.
Congratulations to our Best Dressed and Christmas Treat competition winners!
On the last day of Term 3, many string instrument students from King’s Reedy Creek and Pimpama campuses came together for a full-day workshop where they spent time improving their instrumental skills and learning new techniques. Throughout the day, they had multiple sessions with various instrumental teaching staff, culminating in a combined concert for parents. Many of King’s own educators facilitated the event as well as a special guest educator, Nick Stefan, who is a highly-respected teacher and performer on the Gold Coast. Nick is currently the coordinator of String Studies at The Southport School and teaches students from beginner to early tertiary level students. He has extensive conducting experience having worked at the Gold Coast Youth Orchestra since 2009 and performing as a part of the Gold Coast Chamber Society and Gold Coast Chamber Orchestra. He continually seeks to share his passion for music with students, and it was a great honour to have Nick as part of this valuable workshop.
The culminating concert featured performances from each ensemble but also included combined performances with Pimpama Primary Orchestra and Mezzo Strings; Pimpama High School Orchestra and King’s String Orchestra. A combined concert piece, entitled Greater Than, included all students from the day's workshop and was a fitting way to conclude the event. The workshop was a great experience for all students and staff, and the College looks forward to offering more opportunities like this in the future.
Over the September school holidays, King's Skipperoos competition team travelled to Darwin to compete at the National Championships. Hundreds of athletes from all over Australia competed at this event. The team was coached by Miss Meteyard, Mrs Hawkins and Jasmine Hawkins. Jasmine is also a recent King's alumnus and she competed at the event and won the Championship for her age group.
There were many other individual, pair and team medals as well. Every member of the competing team won at least one medal, which is a huge achievement given the high level of competition. Skipping Australia will soon release the official results and name the Australian team to compete at the World Championships next year in Colorado Springs.
The Skipperoos also enjoyed other activities while in Darwin such as the Mindil Sunset Markets, Crocosaurus Cove, the Darwin waterfront and wave pool, the Litchfield loop of waterfalls and rock pools. It was the most fun trip we have had as a team and we are very grateful to have represented the College at the 2022 National Championships.
If you're wanting to be part of this competition team, boys and girls, or if you want to join beginner skipping, you can register via Compass or contact: skip@kingscollege.qld.edu.au. You can also follow the team on insta @kings_skipperoos
King's Cheer had multiple teams compete in the recent Aussie Gold State Cheer Championships at Logan Metro Sports Centre in September. Performing their cheer routines against other teams from across the State, our enthusiastic cheer squads took to the big stage with abundant energy and amazing teamwork to claim a number of first-place medals. All of our students showed King's culture by supporting their peers and exhibiting lively and captivating performances. Well done to our teams on the following achviements:
King's is passionate about equipping our students with strategies to help them maintain a healthy and happy mindset. One of the ways we do that is by hosting guest speakers who bring words of wisdom through their own life experiences. As the Class of 2022 prepared to leave King's for the last time, it was timely to bring in a guest speaker in Week 2, to encourage them for their future journey. In their last Christian Studies classes, former NRL player, Dayne Weston, spoke to our upcoming graduates about finding their purpose in God. Dayne shared his moving testimony about how he fulfilled his NRL dream as a young man, leaving home at only 15 and needing to 'stand on his own two feet' with limited life experience. He played his NRL debut for the Sharks, followed by contracts with the Cowboys, Panthers and Storm. He married and had two boys and they moved for an NRL contract in the UK, but it was there that his life fell apart. Dayne's (former) wife and sons returned to live in Australia and he found himself in a 'very dark place.' While he was 'doing what he loved, his life looked great from the outside, but on the inside he felt hollow and depressed and he lost the will to live.' He returned to the Gold Coast where he was drawn to a local church and gave his heart to Jesus. Dayne was baptised in 2016 and was also remarried. He now shares his story in the hope of encouraging others and bringing hope to young people who may be struggling with depression or anxiety. Thank you, Dayne, for being so open and honest with our students and helping them see how God uses our lives in unimaginable ways.
We look forward to celebrating the successes of our students at our upcoming Celebration Evenings. During these events, we will be presenting our prestigious annual awards in the auditorium, followed by photos as well as performances and entertainment. All King's families are invited to attend to enjoy our festive celebrations and highlight videos from across the year. Parents have been notified by email, to let them know if their child is receiving an award. Student awardees are required to wear their formal uniform to the event. During our Primary Celebration, we will have roving entertainment in the King's Table Forecourt. Food and drinks will also be available for purchase at both events.
