Annual Chess Summary 2023
It has been another amazing year for our chess students at King's Reedy Creek, filled with incredible results, hard work and determination. Backed by a dedicated coaching team, the development of our students' Chess skills has been at an all-time high and every player has improved and shown strong perseverance.
Terms 1-3 were incredibly successful and in the Hinterland School Championships, King’s students took home all awards from First Place through to Seventh Place! Primary King’s Team 1 ended on a near-perfect score, with Primary King’s Team 2 not far behind. Rentaro Inukai, Joshua Ong, Siannah Cooke and Kevin Zhou were crowned the top Primary team on the Gold Coast. The High School team also performed exceptionally well and took out the top four places in the Term 2 Secondary tournament. Congratulations to Bryan Yang and Edwin Choi who ended with perfect scores. We are so proud of your efforts and more importantly, the obvious sportsmanship you displayed through every single game.
Queensland State Chess Finals saw King’s qualifying 16 students, more than any other school in the State. The Secondary A team (composed of Micah Young, Bryan Yang, Edwin Choi, and Luka Hart) led the event for the majority of the tournament after defeating the top seeds, Anglican Church Grammar School, however, fell just short of First Place at the final hurdle. Overall, King's team finished in 3rd place and Edwin Choi received a First medal for his perfect 6/6 score on board three. Bryan Yang also scored a key draw with a Candidate Master. A clear sign of King’s strength on the State stage, the King’s B team (Cooper Whitaker, Kotaro Inukai, Woo Joon Ki, and William Cameron) finished 12th, ahead of many top chess schools.
In Term 4, King’s has made history by winning 10 out of the 12 Gold Coast Individual Age divisions. Over 800 students competed across all the schools on the Gold Coast. Congratulations to these incredible students:
- 2017 1st Isaac Ong, 2nd Luke Calderoni 3rd Ari Watson
