Patrick Heelan worked diligently throughout his seven years as a student at King's, culminating in a successful final year of study where he earned an ATAR of 93.15. His academic success in Year 12 helped open doors to his future, where he is now studying a double degree in Engineering (Honours) and Mathematics at QUT. Patrick shared some of the ways he achieved success while still finding time for his favourite hobbies - volleyball and video games...

"How did King’s help prepare you for your future career path..."
- They provided lots of opportunities to develop my teamwork skills. These have proven very useful as I study to become an engineer because teamwork is a necessary skill to be successful in this field.
"Were you part of a study group or did you attend the lunch time or after school tutoring sessions? If so, how was this helpful?"
- During my senior years, I would go to the FABLAB once a week to help with my Engineering classwork and projects. In the lead-up to the external exams, I used the Science lunchtime help provided by the head of department. These sessions were valuable to be able to learn more and ask my teacher questions in a smaller one-on-one environment.
"What's your advice for best managing your time in Year 12?"
- I made myself a study plan which outlined the topic I wanted to focus on and the level of competency I wanted at the end of study season.
"How did you manage your sleep, rest, prayer or relaxation time during Year 12?"
- Sleep is so important. When it was time to sleep it did not matter what I was doing, I would stop and do it the next day. When it comes to relaxation, playing volleyball helped to take my mind off the stress and pressure of Year 12 academics.
